Wrocław: Architecture, History and Experiences on the Oder
Accommodation in Wrocław
Wrocław (Breslau) can be explored through very different aspects: early modernism and historic buildings, a monumental panoramic painting, wildlife, and trips on the Oder. These themes can guide your choices for a city break, helping you decide what you would like to focus on. Are you mainly interested in architecture and history, or would you also like to make time for nature, animals and activities on the water? The sights offer concrete points of reference without requiring you to devote your days to a single theme.
Experience architecture and history
The Centennial Hall in Wrocław was designed by Max Berg and built between 1911 and 1913. It is considered an outstanding example of early modernism and demonstrates the innovative use of reinforced-concrete structures in construction. Conceived as an assembly hall, theatre auditorium, exhibition space and sports venue, the building brings together various cultural and public functions in its original design. Anyone interested in architecture will find a concrete starting point here for considering the advent of modernism and the building possibilities of the time.
The city's history is also reflected in buildings with very different backgrounds. Sakwowy Bastion was part of Wrocław's former fortifications and is a historic defensive structure. The Cathedral of St John the Baptist was built in the Gothic style. In the spring of 1945, it was destroyed during the fighting over the Fortress of Breslau; its reconstruction took many years. Architecture and recent history come together here in the story of a single building.
Two other buildings with their own historical significance stand on Ostrów Tumski. The Church of St Giles (kościół pw. św. Idziego) is a late Romanesque building dating from the early 13th century. The Church of St Martin (kościół pw. św. Marcina), by contrast, is a remnant of the ducal castle of the Silesian Piasts, which dates from the late 12th to the early 13th century. Together, these two places offer a glimpse of different medieval traces: a church with a clearly identifiable style, and a church connected with the former Piast castle.
Panoramas, wildlife and trips on the water
The Panorama Racławicka combines an impressive format with a historical subject. The monumental painting measures 15 by 114 metres and surrounds viewers on all sides. It depicts the Battle of Racławice, one of the more significant engagements of the Kościuszko Uprising. The work has also been on display in Wrocław since the 1980s and is one of the city's most important tourist attractions. Its scale and the event it depicts offer two different ways to engage with it: the impact of the panorama and its historical subject.
If you are interested in animals, Wrocław Zoo offers a different perspective on the city. It is Poland's largest and oldest zoological garden and offers a journey through the world of wildlife. The zoo includes the Afrykarium, an oceanarium devoted exclusively to African fauna. More than 350 fish and mammal species from Africa can be seen in 21 tanks and aquariums; the number of species may change over time. The general zoo and the Afrykarium, with its focus on African fauna, therefore offer two distinct reasons to visit.
The Oder also offers a way to experience Wrocław from the water. Options include trips on large excursion ships, smaller boats, modern motorboats and electric boats powered by solar batteries. Services and operators may change seasonally. If you would like to plan a trip, check the current options in advance.
Cycle routes and the focus of your trip
Wrocław has around 1,500 kilometres of cycle-friendly routes, including routes through parks and along riverbanks. 400 kilometres are designated specifically for cyclists.
When choosing accommodation, it may help to first decide what kind of stay you want: the Centennial Hall, the Panorama Racławicka and the churches appeal to travellers who want to focus on architecture and history. The zoo and Afrykarium offer a different emphasis, while trips on the Oder and cycle routes provide further activity options.
