Nowy Kościół can be explored through three very different themes: sandstone from the late Permian, traces of the former Zedlitz estate and a red-marked cycling loop through several places. This mix gives you a concrete starting point for deciding whether you are more interested in geology, local history or a longer bike ride. The themes have different scales: the sandstone outcrops point to a distant geological past, the park and oak tree are local landmarks, and the Agatowa Loop passes through a series of places.

Sandstone from the Late Permian
The sandstone outcrops in the Kaczawa Valley near Nowy Kościół document a depositional environment from the late Permian, around 250 million years ago. The date is approximate, but it places the rocks in a geological period. A depositional environment describes the conditions under which material was laid down. This means the sandstone is not just a visible rock formation, but also evidence of a very ancient geological process. Compared with the history of the Zedlitz estate, this takes us much further back in time; both offer a different way of understanding the character of the place.
Park, Former Estate and Oak Tree
In the centre of Nowy Kościół is the park of the former Zedlitz estate, where remarkable trees grow. Almost nothing remains of the estate’s former palace, which had previously been a castle. Thus, two distinct aspects sit side by side at this central historic site: the earlier architectural history and the park’s remarkable trees. For a cultural-historical perspective, the succession of castle and palace offers a point of interest; the trees draw attention to the town centre.
There is also an English oak on Kolejowa Street, described as the thickest in the municipality of Świerzawa. It adds another distinct landmark to the remarkable trees in the park. Together, these two local references provide a concrete framework for exploring the trees and the history of the former estate.
Cycling the Agatowa Loop
The red-marked Agatowa Loop runs through Świerzawa, Gozdno, Biegoszów, Nowy Kościół, Sokołowiec, Rząśnik, Orzechowice and Lubiechowa before returning to Świerzawa. Its scope differs from the local themes of the park and sandstone: the route places Nowy Kościół within a longer sequence of places. The Romanesque Church Ruins
