Pratulin preserves memories of the Uniate martyrs in several places. Church art, exposed foundations, a cemetery and two differently designed paths give the place a clear historical and religious theme. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these features: some are in the parish church, while others are at Plac Męczeństwa Unitów or the Uniate cemetery. This lets you choose your focus rather than treating the places as interchangeable stops.
Church Art and Remembrance in the Parish Church
The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul houses a reliquary of the Blessed Martyrs of Podlasie. The image of Our Lady of Pratulin, “Nadziei i Jedności,” is also in the church. The icon dates from the 18th century and survived the destruction of the Uniate church in Pratulin. The reliquary and the image offer different points of focus: one is associated with the martyrs, while the other tells the story of a work of art that survived destruction. Those interested in religious art will therefore find a different way into the history of the place here than among the visible architectural traces outdoors.
Foundations, Cemetery and Stations of the Cross
The exposed foundations of the Uniate church can be seen at Plac Męczeństwa Unitów, where the Uniates died defending their faith. A stone cross stands in the Uniate cemetery. An approximately 1,100-metre-long Stations of the Cross trail connects the square with this cemetery. The approximate length gives you a concrete sense of the scale of this route; its two endpoints also show how the trail links the square and the cemetery.
The Dróżki Pratulińskie are distinct from this route: they run around a pond, with 13 chapels containing wooden figures of the martyrs along the way. The two routes therefore offer different spatial experiences. For the Stations of the Cross, the length and the connection between Plac Męczeństwa Unitów and the cemetery are specified; for the Dróżki, the pond, chapels and figures shape the description. The Pratulin Martyrdom
Another historic wooden church in Pratulin is the Martyrium Pratulińskie. The building dates from the 18th century, was moved from Stanin to Pratulin, and was installed there between 2009 and 2012 following an extensive renovation. Today, it serves as a documentation centre and museum of the Podlasie Martyrs. Its own history as a building—from its origins in Stanin to its installation in Pratulin—is thus connected with its role as a place of documentation and remembrance. Both the icon and the Martyrium Pratulińskie date from the 18th century.
