Parczew combines a preserved medieval street layout with religious architecture, local Jewish history and hiking trails. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: you can focus on historic sites or include routes that start or end in Parczew, or pass through the city’s streets. This makes it easier to decide in advance whether you mainly want to explore the culture or also plan longer walks.

Cityscape and Architectural History in Parczew

Parczew’s medieval street layout has been preserved and dates back to a settlement established under Magdeburg law. Underground archaeological traces add clues about settlement and urban development to the visible city structure. Those interested in the town’s history will find two distinct perspectives here: the city’s inherited layout and traces of its earlier development.

Plac Wolności is the market square within this historic layout. The market hall, built in 1938 to a design by Artur Bernhardt, is located there. The square and hall thus link the historic cityscape with a specific 20th-century building.

Basilica, Bell Tower and Stations of the Cross

The Minor Basilica, the Sanctuary of Our Lady Queen of Families, is a Neo-Gothic church with two distinctive towers and five wooden altars. Polychrome decorations and stained-glass windows adorn the interior. The windows include depictions of Saint Anthony from 1939 and the Assumption of Mary from 1937. Next to the basilica stands a wooden bell tower dating from 1675, now used as a funeral chapel and considered the city’s oldest surviving historic building.

Another religious feature is the Stations of the Cross, created in 2008 next to the Church of Saint John the Baptist. Its stations are stone sculptures depicting events from the final days of Christ’s life. Together, the church, bell tower and Stations of the Cross illustrate different forms of religious architecture and visual art in Parczew.

Local History and Remembrance

Jewish history is also part of the city’s story. The former synagogue at 1 Piwonia Street was built in the eclectic style after 1873 and used for religious purposes until 1939. The former mikveh at the same address was built in the early 20th century. After the Second World War, it was converted into an event and cinema hall; today it is a wedding venue.

A park with a monument to the victims of the Second World War now stands on the site of the former Jewish cemetery. The site’s former use as a cemetery is linked to its present-day function as a memorial. This stop adds a quiet reminder of the war’s victims to the architectural landmarks.

Hiking Trails of Different Lengths

The green PTTK hiking trail LU-5516 is 29 kilometres long. It connects the Parczew bus station with Białka and runs along streets in Parczew. The black hiking trail runs for 8.9 kilometres from Milanów to Parczew, entering the city via Władysława Jagiełły Street. The distances can be compared when planning your route; the endpoints also show that the trails approach Parczew from different directions. Check the local trail markers before setting out.

Traditional Fair

The annual Jarmark Jagielloński in Parczew combines historical reenactments with sculpture, painting and traditional crafts. These include ceramics, pottery and embroidery. The event offers a different focus from the city’s permanent architectural and historical landmarks: here, cultural performances and craftwork take centre stage. Dates and individual editions vary; check the event dates if you plan to time your trip around it.
