Sagan: River Routes, Parkland and History
Accommodation in Żagań (Sagan)
Sagan (Żagań) brings together the Bóbr River, an extensive park and palace complex, historic buildings and themed routes. The town appeals to travelers who want to include nature and culture in their trip to Poland.
The Bóbr, routes and parkland
The 9.5-kilometer Ścieżka Dzików runs along the Bóbr’s riverside meadows and oxbow lakes, as well as the pine forests of the extensive Lower Silesian Wilderness. The route thus connects several distinct landscape features. Its length is a useful guide when planning your outings.
The Ścieżka Wiewiórek runs through Żagań’s park and palace complex. Covering more than 100 hectares, it is shaped by the Bóbr. In Park Pałacowy, around Pałac Książęcy, classical garden design meets a natural, romantic landscape. Preserved sightlines, mature trees and gently winding paths invite you to stroll and relax.
Wieża Widokowa offers another perspective on the town, combining a recreational and historical function with views of Żagań and the surrounding green spaces. Those particularly interested in the parkland will find a different viewpoint here than on the paths through the complex itself.
Town history and cultural sites
For centuries, the former Augustinian canonry in Żagań was a center of religious, scientific and intellectual life. The surviving medieval town walls also tell the story of the town’s former role: built in the 14th century, they formed part of its defensive system. The former Jesuit college and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul make up a monumental religious and educational complex.
The Muzeum Obozów Jenieckich is associated with the history of Allied prisoners of war. In the area around Żagań, Stalag Luft III was also established in the spring of 1942, south of the town and west of the existing Stalag VIII C camp. These sites offer different points of reference for exploring the history of Sagan and its surroundings.
Visitors to Pałac Książęcy can see its state rooms and arcaded courtyard. The themed route devoted to the heritage of Duchess Dorothea also begins in front of the palace. This puts a specific sightseeing destination alongside a historical themed route in Żagań, though they offer different visitor experiences.
Themed routes, cycling and waterside experiences
The open-air Solar System installation is part of the tourist route “Śladami Johannesa Keplera w Żaganiu.” Another route, “Kamienne Ślady Przeszłości,” is three kilometers long and starts at the gatehouse, now home to the Centrum Informacji Turystycznej in Żagań. For cyclists, the interregional Bałtyk–Karkonosze cycle route passes through Żagań on its way from Trzebież to Jelenia Góra.
The Bóbr also shapes the opportunities for outings on the water. The river carries participants on numerous kayak trips and is considered a symbol of Żagań, particularly its park. One kayaking route on the Bóbr covers the stretch from Szprotawa to Żagań. Water excursions thus offer a distinct travel interest alongside routes through the landscape, park and history of the town.
If you are interested in a guided town tour, contact the Centrum Informacji Turystycznej. The tours are aimed primarily at organized groups; the date, duration and reservation details are arranged individually with the center. Winnica Saganum offers another guided experience, including a tasting of wine and snacks among the vines.
