Monastic Library and History
The post-Augustinian monastery complex was granted the status of a Pomnik Historii, a Historic Monument of Poland, in 2011. Within the complex, the monastic library is a special cultural site: since the 15th century, it has been one of Silesia’s most famous libraries. It has survived almost intact and is known for its distinctive acoustics in the so-called Whispering Vault. The Muzeum Obozów Jenieckich offers a different perspective on history. Routes Through the Town and Park
The Szlak wielkiej ucieczki (Great Escape Trail) is a circular route that starts and ends at the museum grounds. The museum is therefore a reference point both at the beginning and at the end of the route. Another tourist route, “Kamienne Ślady Przeszłości,” is 3 km long. It starts at the Domku Portiera, now the Centrum Informacji Turystycznej w Żaganiu, at the park entrance, and passes the Domku Inspektora Parku. Other named stops include Zacisze Doroty, Domek Wędkarski, Miejsce Marii and Wyspa Marii; the route extends to the former Oranżeria nad Bobrem and other places associated with the history of the Princely Park.
The two routes have different focuses: the Szlak wielkiej ucieczki is described as a loop that starts and ends at the museum. “Kamienne Ślady Przeszłości” has a specified length and leads to a series of named places associated with the Princely Park. Park Landscape and Places Associated with a Princess’s Heritage
The Ścieżka „Park Słowiański“ runs through a town park with various woodland habitats, park ponds, the Bóbr River and the “Gród Chrobry” archaeological site. The park also has a clearing, a fire pit, benches and a toilet. The route thus connects several different park features; the named places range from woodland and ponds to the river and archaeological site. This is a different focus from routes explicitly associated with the museum’s history or the Princely Park.
The Żagań Heritage Route of Princess Dorota leads to historic places in Żagań associated with the life and history of Dorota de Talleyrand-Périgord. These include the castle and park complex with the princely castle and landscaped park, the former administrative building of the princess, and the Dom Wdowi on Plac Słowiański. The route also includes the tower of the former Protestant church, the post-Augustinian monastery complex, the town hall tower on Rynek and the St. Dorothea Hospital complex. The connection between these places and the princess can thus be explored as a distinct theme alongside the park and museum routes.
The tower of the former Protestant church was restored in 2004 and now serves as an observation tower offering panoramic views of the town. It combines its historic use as a church building with its current function as a viewpoint. Together with the routes and monastery complex, it offers another perspective on Żagań’s architectural and urban history.
