Ośno Lubuskie combines a striking medieval fortification system with an Old Town, a Gothic church and Lake Reczynek. If you would like to include culture and nature in your trip to Poland, you’ll find a range of options here: historic walls and sacred buildings, as well as a municipal bathing area and signposted trails. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus your trip on the Old Town and its architectural history or on the activities around the lake.

Medieval ring of town walls and walking avenues

The almost completely preserved ring of granite and brick forms the main part of Ośno Lubuskie’s medieval fortification system. The walls are up to 6 metres high. Brick battlements topped them, accessible from walkways on the inner side. Arrow slits were positioned at the level of the walkways. This makes it possible to describe the complex not only as a continuous ring of walls, but also through its individual structural features.

The surviving structures include two round towers, three full-height rectangular half-towers, including their roofs, and seven rectangular half-towers without roofs. There are also seven gates. The different shapes and heights make the fortifications a specific theme for a walk through the city’s history, without any one tower needing to be the sole focal point.

Walking avenues were laid out around the defensive walls at the turn of the 20th century. They were paved and planted with two rows of lime trees. The design of the surrounding area is therefore also part of the fortifications’ history: alongside the medieval structure, the avenues added later represent another layer of the city’s development.

Church, town hall and Old Town

St James’s Church stands on a small rise in the centre of the Old Town’s street layout. The town hall adjoins it to the east. St James’s is considered a particularly valuable and imposing example of Gothic architecture, and its form is well preserved. Some of its most valuable furnishings include a Mannerist high altar, a pulpit and a baptismal font. Those interested in architecture and church furnishings will find different features to appreciate in this one building.

The restored town hall is one of the city’s most valuable monuments and an important part of its local cultural heritage. The Muzeum Ziemi Torzymskiej is housed in the historic town hall. The town hall and church thus offer two distinct ways to explore the Old Town and its cultural heritage.

Another stop on a tour of the city’s architecture is St Gertrude’s Chapel. It was built around the middle of the 15th century on the site of an older half-timbered building. The chapel stands on a rise northwest of the Old Town and is a small brick building. Its interior consists of a single-aisle, single-room hall with an eastern end closed on three sides. Its location and simple floor plan distinguish it in the description from the centrally located St James’s Church.

Lake Reczynek and trails through the surrounding area

Lake Reczynek lies in the north of Ośno Lubuskie, within the city limits, and is a municipal bathing area. Nearby are a recreation centre with water sports equipment rental, a campsite, a small sports field and a playground. Kayaks and pedal boats are also available to rent at the bathing area. This offers a different range of experiences for planning your trip than exploring the town walls, town hall and church architecture.

Marked hiking and cycling trails pass through Ośno Lubuskie and are suitable for recreation and exploring the natural surroundings. The protected landscape areas “Uroczysko Ośniańskich Jezior” and “Uroczysko Doliny Lenki” are mentioned in connection with these trails. This lets you weigh up the options of exploring the city’s culture, getting active on signposted trails and enjoying the facilities at Lake Reczynek. The different themes can also help you choose the right focus for your stay.
