Factory Settlement and Linen Tradition

The 19th-century factory settlement comprises workers’ housing, a villa district for managers, public buildings and factory buildings. The settlement and the adjacent former factory grounds now form Żyrardów’s historic centre. Together, the entire factory settlement and the former industrial site cover around 70 hectares and are listed as a Pomnik Historii, or Historic Monument.

The Muzeum Lniarstwa im. Filipa de Girarda presents Żyrardów’s linen traditions, which date back to 1829. They are associated with the development of the linen industry and the Fabryka Wyrobów Lnianych, described as Europe’s most powerful centre of the linen industry. The museum’s old looms were brought back into operation after the decline of the Zakłady Lniarskie. Today, they are operated for demonstrations during the summer season—a seasonal attraction for anyone interested in linen production.

The collection at the Muzeum Mazowsza Zachodniego also offers insights into Żyrardów’s history, its textile factories and the traditional material culture of the city’s population. It includes a watercolour panorama of the factory settlement dating from 1899. Measuring 140 × 367 cm, the work was commissioned by the owners of the Zakłady Żyrardowskie for the World’s Fair in Paris and shows the settlement from a bird’s-eye view. A permanent gallery is dedicated to the works of Józef Rapacki.

Resursa, Exhibitions and City History

Resursa combines cultural history with an impressively designed interior: its ballroom features rich gilding and colourful murals and is designed in the Renaissance style with classical elements. The building was originally reserved for the local elite. Following its restoration, it regained its former splendour and once again serves as a centre of cultural life. Żyrardów’s Tourist and Cultural Information Centre is also based at Resursa.

Another way to explore the city’s history is through MOTKa, the Multimedialny Ośrodek Tradycji i Edukacji Kulturowej. Created for residents and tourists, it is aimed particularly at children and young people. An interactive model shows the historic factory settlement. Using a wristband, visitors activate multimedia stations in turn, where they take on quiz questions, games and puzzles. MOTKa thus complements the museums’ perspectives on Żyrardów with an interactive exhibition experience.

Park, Walks and Bathing Area

For a quieter perspective, visit Park Miejski im. Karola Augusta Dittricha. This almost six-hectare green space is in the centre of Żyrardów, in the residential district of the factory settlement. The gently undulating grounds, a naturalistic water system and numerous bridges shape the park. Alongside the industrial history and exhibitions, visitors can also explore this landscaped green space.

At Zalew Żyrardowski, the bathing area includes a 750 m² sandy beach and supervised swimming areas. Opening arrangements may vary by season, so take this into account when planning your visit. Allow around two hours for a walk along the Szlak Architektury Przemysłowej „Industrialny Żyrardów“ if you are not visiting additional interiors. The route conveys the importance of the factory and the working and living conditions of the local community during the city’s rapid industrial development.
