Thirteen passive and combat bunkers from the Second World War have been preserved in Bakałarzewo. The main bunker houses a museum, where you can view objects and listen to stories told by Andrzej Stróżyk. Alongside the preserved structures, exhibits and narrated memories are also at the centre of the experience. Another historic destination is the open-air Fortification Museum in Bakałarzewo. The Ścieżka Jaćwieska is a walking path by Lake Sumowo. It includes a paved section and the Mostek Zakochanych (Lovers’ Bridge). These specific features give the path its own character: the paved stretch and the bridge are landmarks that distinguish it from a mere lakeshore. There are also developed lakeshores at Sumowo and Siekierowo. The names of the two lakes help you tell the shores apart when considering which waterside setting matters most for your stay.
Płycizna, a children’s bathing area on the Rospuda, is part of the Bulwar 500-lecia Bakałarzewa. This is a different waterside setting from the paths and shores at the two lakes. Check the current conditions before going for a swim. This way, when planning, you can distinguish between a walk at Sumowo, a visit to one of the named lakeshores and the bathing area on the Rospuda, rather than grouping these different places under the general impression of “by the water”.
Three tourist and educational trails
In addition to the Ścieżka Jaćwieska, Bakałarzewo has three tourist and educational trails: Jaćwieska, Patriotyczna and Żydowska. Their names offer a simple way to orient yourself if you want to make trails a distinct part of your stay. The Jaćwieska is also a walking path by Lake Sumowo; the other two trails are called Patriotyczna and Żydowska. Together with the area’s distinctive historical themes, the trails offer another way to explore the place, without all describing the same experience.
