History and settlement character

Ostrowite was first mentioned in historical records in 1215. Historical records list the name forms Hostricza, Wostricza, Ostritcza and Ostriza for the settlement.

Ostrowite has a dispersed settlement structure. The settlement is partly laid out as a street village and partly as a linear village; it lies on both sides of a road running from north to south and was mentioned in 1292. On the road from Ostrowite towards Grabiny-Zameczek is a well-preserved, characteristic Dutch-style farm complex that is worthy of protection.

In 1945, Ostrowite and Suchy Dąb were merged into an administrative municipality called Suchy Dąb. After 1945, the name Ostrowite was given to a new settlement located west of Suchy Dąb.

Landscape

Ostrowite lies within the Żuławy Gdańskie Landscape Protection Area. The fields near Ostrowite feature strip farming running from east to west. The agricultural landscape around Ostrowite includes historic irrigation canals.

The name Ostrowite has been associated with a lake that was drained in the 12th century during the drainage of the Żuławy and no longer exists today. In Ostrowite, a roadside chapel is the only named religious cultural asset.

Transport

In the immediate vicinity of Ostrowite run National Road No. 1, which leads from Gdańsk to Cieszyn and the Czech border and forms part of the international E75 route, and the A1 motorway, which runs parallel to it.

The international E-65 railway corridor between Gdynia and Warsaw runs a few kilometres from Ostrowite. Rail services are provided by the station in neighbouring Pszczółki and the nearby railway junction station in Tczew.

Things to do

During the 8th Family Cycling Rally (“VIII Rodzinny Rajd Rowerowy”), participants reached Ostrowite after travelling from Suchy Dąb via Skowarcz. Ostrowite is marked on an official map of canoe routes in the area of the Martwa Wisła and Śmiała Wisła near Gdańsk, together with the Motława.
