Łęgowo: St. Nicholas Church and historic Żuławy houses
Accommodation in Łęgowo
Łęgowo combines sacred history with older residential architecture. At St. Nicholas Parish Church, you can trace several construction phases and religious mementos; the village is also home to inhabited Żuławy houses dating from the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. This contrast offers two distinct cultural and historical perspectives during your stay: church architecture and houses still in use today.
St. Nicholas Parish Church: several construction phases
Before it was destroyed, the church was Gothic; its present appearance dates to the 1748 reconstruction. The tower was rebuilt in its current form after a fire in 1862. The dates refer to different aspects of the building: 1748 to the church’s appearance, and 1862 to the tower. The style descriptions also refer to different elements: Gothic describes the church before its destruction, while Baroque describes the interior. This makes it possible to consider the church building, tower, and interior separately, rather than seeing them as the result of a single reconstruction.
The high altar features an image of Our Lady, Queen of Poland and Advocate of Reconciliation. On January 15, 2008, Archbishop Tadeusz Gocłowski established the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Łęgowo – Queen of Poland, Advocate of Reconciliation, in Łęgowo. The altarpiece and the sanctuary’s name invoke the same title, connecting a specific place within the church with the establishment of the sanctuary.
Bells and religious mementos
Two 17th-century bells hang in the tower, dated 1625 and 1645. They were stolen and taken to Germany in 1942; in 2008 they returned to their place. Their history can thus be traced through their dates, removal, and return. The sanctuary’s establishment in 2008 was a separate event: that same year saw both the bells’ return and the establishment of the sanctuary.
The church also contains relics of the Holy Cross. Relics of St. Olivia of Anagni were brought there from Italy in 2013. Together with the image on the high altar, they add religious points of reference to the architectural and historical perspective.
Żuławy houses: historic residential architecture
The Żuławy houses provide a different architectural focus. Łęgowo has buildings of this kind dating from the mid-19th and early 20th centuries; they are listed in the municipal register of monuments. The houses are still inhabited and are often well maintained and in good condition. Their listing and continued use describe two sides of the same buildings: they are part of the historic architecture and remain homes. This creates a clear contrast in how to view Łęgowo: at the church, the focus is on specific reconstruction dates and religious objects; for the houses, it is on periods of construction, their listing in the register of monuments, and their continued residential use.
