Accommodation in Straszyn
Straszyn is shaped by the Radunia and the hydropower plants along its course. A kayaking trip runs from Straszyn to Pruszcz Gdański; the EW Straszyn hydropower plant and a Way of the Cross behind St. Jacek Odrowąż Church are also among the town’s special points of interest. This makes it possible to explore Straszyn from different perspectives: on the water, on a walk, or by looking at its traces of engineering and church history.
Hydropower on the Radunia
The EW Straszyn hydropower plant was built in 1910. Its output is 2,411 kW and its head is 13.80 m. These figures describe two different aspects of the plant: its output and the difference in elevation that the water overcomes there. On the seven-kilometre stretch of the Radunia kayaking route between Straszyn and Pruszcz Gdański, visitors can see historic hydropower plants from the early 20th century, some of which are still in operation. Those interested in the history of technology will find a tangible connection to the use of the river along the kayaking route. A visit to the EW Straszyn plant can be included in a kayaking trip between Straszyn and Pruszcz Gdański.
Kayaking from Straszyn to Pruszcz Gdański
The “Szlak Elektrowni Wodnych” kayaking route follows the Radunia from Straszyn to Pruszcz Gdański. The route alternates between fast-flowing river sections and reservoirs at the hydropower plants. When planning the trip, you should also allow for its approximate duration: the journey from Straszyn to Pruszcz Gdański is estimated to take about two hours, depending on water levels and group size. This is not a fixed duration; the stated conditions affect the estimate.
There is a landing stage and a meadow near the “Mielnik” bakery. After making arrangements in advance with the “Radunia” kayaking club in Straszyn, you can start or end a kayaking trip there. This information is particularly relevant when planning to start or finish the trip in Straszyn: use of the site is subject to prior arrangement with the club. From Straszyn, the kayaking trip can continue beyond Pruszcz Gdański along the Radunia and the Motława all the way to Gdańsk.
Other routes along the river
There are also routes connected to the Radunia beyond the kayaking trip. A scenic route leads from Straszyn towards Juszkowo to a kayak landing stage. On an organised 9.5-kilometre walk, the Bielkowo and Straszyn hydropower plants were viewed from the outside, and Lake Straszyńskie was circled. Which perspective best suits your outing depends on whether you want to travel on the water, on foot, or along a route towards Juszkowo.
Way of the Cross and historic tombstones
Behind St. Jacek Odrowąż Church is a Way of the Cross, with its stations marked by large boulders. Historic tombstones belonging to the Tiedemann family are also located behind the church. The Tiedemanns owned Prędzieszyn, Goszyn, Rusocin, Grabiny-Zameczek and Wojanowo. Their remains were presumably found there during construction work at the church. The site thus brings together a religious landmark and a history that also sheds light on the ownership of land in the area at the time.
Another connection to the surrounding area is the recurring “Wojewódzki Bieg Doliną Raduni” run, whose route passes between Juszkowo and Straszyn.
