Borowo: Mosaic Art, History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Borowo
Borowo lies along a former Gdańsk–Kartuzy transport route, in a wooded, damp setting near the Borkowskie Lake District. The landscape, local history and mosaic art give the village several distinct facets. When planning your visit, it is worth considering these topics separately: the settlement pattern tells the story of Borowo’s development, the church draws attention to its mosaics, and the cycling routes offer an active perspective. This will help you decide whether to focus more on culture, nature or both.

Settlement Pattern and History
Borowo’s linear settlement pattern is not very pronounced and developed in the 20th century. It originated as an earlier cart settlement. Historically, Borowo also lay on a trade route to West Pomerania. These are different points in the village’s history: the trade route places it within an earlier connection, while the settlement pattern tells the story of its development.
One early, precisely dated event was the donation of Borowo’s lands in 1209: the Pomeranian princes Mestwin and Świętopełk gave them to the Norbertine convent in Żukowo. The parish of Christ, King of the Universe in Borowo was established with effect from 10 January 1982. Together, these dates mark different milestones in the village’s history.
Mosaics and a Playground
The church in Borowo is known for the beauty and size of its mosaics. It is therefore sometimes called “the Kashubian Ravenna.” The nickname draws attention to mosaic art as a distinctive feature of the church and offers a specific cultural point of interest for a visit to Borowo.
A playground is also among the local leisure facilities: it opened on 19 May 2022 on the site of a former campsite as a place for relaxation, leisure and children’s play. If you plan to visit, check its condition and access beforehand. This keeps the fact of its opening at that time separate from the question of what you will find there today.
Cycling and the Natural Environment
A cycling route has been established between Borkowo and Borowo. As part of the project, information boards and solar lamps were installed, and the existing tourist infrastructure was upgraded. For a specific ride, check the signage and conditions on site.
Another infrastructure project concerns a pedestrian and cycling path between Borowo and Borkowo. It is being developed within a protected landscape area and near the nature reserve and Special Protection Area “Jar Rzeki Raduni.” This distinction matters when planning: the cycling route has been established, while the pedestrian and cycling connection is described as a project.
More to Explore in the Wider Destination of Kartuzy
The wider destination of Kartuzy offers its own cultural and landscape attractions. Kartuzy is home to a Gothic collegiate church dating from the 14th century, one of Pomerania’s most valuable architectural monuments and unique on a national scale. It bears witness to the activity of the Carthusian Order. Its Baroque coffin-lid-shaped roof symbolizes the Carthusian monks’ monastic way of life with the words “memento mori” (“Remember that you will die”). By contrast, the church in Borowo is known primarily for its mosaics.
The Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum in Kartuzy explores literature, material culture, language, regional history and traditions. Its exhibits are spread across eight exhibition rooms in the main building. The areas featured there include Bazyli’s forge, the exhibition “Kaszubska współczesność z korzeni wyrasta” and temporary exhibitions.
Kartuzy also offers an option for getting active: Promenada Asesora is a pedestrian and cycling path along the shore of Lake Karczemne. It is connected to Ławka Asesora, which serves as a viewpoint over Kartuzy. Alongside Borowo’s mosaic church, Kartuzy therefore offers other cultural and landscape attractions located specifically in the town.
