Local history at three landmarks
The Starościński Manor House dates from the 18th century and was the seat of the district administrator of Kartuzy before the Second World War. The current building of the Mirachowo forester’s lodge was built in 1870 at the initiative of the Prussian administration. Countess Szczaniawska founded the Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in 1730. Together, these three places offer different insights: into administrative history, building history under Prussian administration, and a religious foundation. Anyone who wants to get to know Mirachowo through its history will find specific names and dates here rather than a single narrative about the village.
Lake, forest and a circular trail nearby
Not far from Mirachowo, Diabelski Kamień lies on the shore of Lake Kamienne, in the municipality of Kartuzy. Its circumference is about 17 metres. Another landmark in the landscape is the Lubygość Nature Reserve: it covers just under 70 hectares and includes Lake Lubygość and the surrounding forests on the steep slopes of a glacial valley. The figures describe different scales—the circumference of a single stone and the larger protected area comprising the lake, forest and valley slopes.
A 5.8-kilometre forest walk forms a circular route around Lake Lubygość. Alongside the description of the nature reserve, this provides a specific distance for planning; no walking time is given. Check local conditions before setting out. The “Lubygość” tourist station marks the end of this walk. If you plan to visit the station, check the current rules in advance.
A historic landmark in the countryside
The reconstructed “Ptasia Wola” partisan bunker complex of TOW Gryf Pomorski lies along the Pętla Mirachowska, nearby. Local partisans hid there during the Second World War. The bunker adds a tangible wartime reminder to the landscape. When planning, you can therefore choose between the circular route around Lake Lubygość and a historical landmark along the Pętla Mirachowska, without treating the two destinations as having the same story or route distance.
Karthaus: more to explore in Kartuzy
The wider destination of Karthaus offers further cultural and landscape attractions in Kartuzy. The Gothic collegiate church dates from the 14th century, is among the most valuable historic buildings in Pomerania and is unique at the national level. It bears witness to the work of the Carthusian Order. Its distinctive Baroque roof resembles a coffin lid and, with the words “memento mori”—“remember death”—symbolises the monastic way of life of the Carthusian monks.
The Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum in Kartuzy presents Kashubian cultural heritage: literature, material culture, language, and regional history and traditions. The exhibits are displayed in eight galleries in the main building. They include Bazyli’s forge, the exhibition “Kashubian Contemporary Culture Grows from Its Roots” and temporary exhibitions. The museum thus offers a different perspective from Mirachowo’s architectural history, focusing instead on the culture and traditions of the region.
The paths and green spaces in Kartuzy also offer their own highlights. The Asesora Promenade is a walking and cycling path along the shore of Lake Karczemne and is connected to the Asesora Bench, which serves as a viewpoint over Kartuzy. It is also a popular destination for outings by locals and tourists alike. Another promenade was created in 2020 beside Lake Klasztorne Małe. The Kartuzy Foresters’ Arboretum lies on the northwestern edge of the town and covers 4.03 hectares of a managed forest that is over 100 years old. It is home to 23 species and varieties of woody plants, as well as more than 150 species of herbaceous plants and shrubs. This gives you another comparison within the wider destination of Karthaus: lakeside paths and a viewpoint alongside an arboretum with botanical diversity.
