Ryjewo offers several starting points for planning a trip: two churches with different historical backgrounds, a forest path by a small lake, and several routes that pass through the town or start and finish there. From the hill of the Church of the Holy Family, the view stretches across the Vistula Valley and the surrounding forests to Gniew Castle. You can shape your stay around the themes that interest you most: history, a waterside path or a longer route.

Churches and history in Ryjewo

The Neo-Gothic Church of the Holy Family was built in 1908–1909. It was declared a sanctuary in 1934 and re-established as a sanctuary in 1987. Every year, on the first Sunday after August 15, a feast of indulgence in honour of the Holy Family is held there, drawing pilgrims from nearby towns. The church hill also offers views of the Vistula Valley, the surrounding forests and Gniew Castle.

In addition to the church, the listed complex includes its cemetery, the rectory and the adjoining green space. Its entry in the Pomeranian Voivodeship register of monuments is numbered 333/94 and dated 11.02.1994. Another church in the town, Bł. Michała Kozala, was built in 1895 for the local Protestant congregation. It is listed in the register of monuments under number 131/89. Following its reconstruction from 1988 to 1991, it now serves Catholics and the parish of Bł. Michała Kozala.

Forest path by a small lake

The Ryjewo Path is beside a small lake at the entrance to the town from the direction of Sztum. In the forest, it follows a stream that flows into the lake. The path is characterised by seating areas and several bridges over the stream. Nearly all coniferous and deciduous tree species found in Poland grow along the route; some of the oaks are natural monuments. The focus here is therefore on the watercourse, forest and variety of tree species—a different theme from the churches and their history.

The path can also be considered in relation to the view from the hill of the Church of the Holy Family: there, the focus is on the Vistula Valley, the surrounding forests and Gniew Castle; on the Ryjewo Path, it is on the stream, bridges and trees. Each description offers its own way of experiencing the landscape, without requiring you to look for the same features in both places.

Routes for different plans

The Green Cycling Route in the Gmina Ryjewo is 44 kilometres long; the listed route starts and finishes in Ryjewo. Another described circular route is 23 kilometres long. It runs from Ryjewo via Jałowiec, Mątowskie Pastwiska, Benowo, the Benowo forester’s lodge, the Swedish Ramparts, the Sarnowo forester’s lodge and Borowiec, before returning to Ryjewo. The two routes differ in length and course: the 44-kilometre route starts and finishes in Ryjewo, while the 23-kilometre circular route passes through the places listed above before returning.

The 118.1-kilometre Kopernikowski Trail, between Biała Góra and Kwidzyn, also passes through Ryjewo. The distances help put the routes into perspective: the Green Cycling Route and the 23-kilometre circular route start and finish in Ryjewo, while the Kopernikowski Trail passes through the town on a longer route between two other endpoints.

A former cemetery as another place of historical interest

The former Evangelical cemetery is on ul. Grunwaldzka, behind building no. 100. Its western section was laid out around the middle of the 19th century, and the eastern section dates from around 1895. The cemetery, which dates from the first half of the 19th century, has been restored in recent years and is maintained on an ongoing basis. The two sections give the site different historical time periods; together with the churches, they add to the historical themes of Ryjewo.

When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether to focus your plans on the churches and historical sites, the forest path or the routes. Ryjewo brings these different themes together in the sights and routes described here.
