Kosakowo – Memorial Site, Culture and Sledding
Accommodation in Kosakowo
Kosakowo brings together places of remembrance and culture with a distinctive winter tradition: sledding competitions are held on an artificially raised hill in the center. The memorial site for Polish soldiers, the Church of St. Anthony of Padua and the Checz Nordowych KaszebĂłw also help shape the character of the place. Kosakowo therefore offers a range of starting points for a trip, from quiet remembrance to a seasonal outdoor experience.
A winter experience in the center
The hill in the center is the venue for winter sledding competitions. The sledding hill is next to a cycle path. Visitors to Kosakowo in the colder months will find a local activity that differs from the town’s historical and cultural attractions. The sledding hill has been a winter attraction for locals and visitors alike; the competitions on the hill give this seasonal activity a distinct connection to the center.
Winter sledding adds its own distinctive touch.
Kashubian architecture and religious art
The Checz Nordowych KaszebĂłw opened in 2012. Its architecture draws on historical Kashubian buildings. The house is also home to the local branch of the Zrzeszenie Kaszubsko-Pomorskie, which organizes cultural activities. The Checz thus brings together historical Kashubian architectural forms and the cultural work of the local branch.
The Church of St. Anthony of Padua also preserves a piece of history: fragments of the pre-war altars remain inside. Another historical feature is the Stations of the Cross, created in 1965–1966. Its scenes depict the Passion of Christ against a backdrop of camp landscapes, gallows, scenes from death marches and prisoners. These somber motifs set the Stations of the Cross apart from a purely decorative work of art and make it a notable part of Kosakowo’s cultural profile.
Remembrance and the historic center
The Kwatera Żołnierzy Września 1939 is the resting place of 120 Polish soldiers, including 40 unknown soldiers. They were among the defenders of Kępa Oksywska. Located in the parish cemetery, the Kwatera is a memorial to those who died for Poland’s freedom. Visitors exploring the history of the place will encounter a tangible memorial here, which also draws attention to the defenders of Kępa Oksywska.
The remaining village settlement area of Kosakowo, which is protected as a historic monument, also contributes to the historic character of the place. Together with the memorial site, the surviving altar fragments and the Stations of the Cross, it shows that Kosakowo can be experienced not only through individual sights, but also through the traces of history in its streetscape. The Checz Nordowych KaszebĂłw adds another perspective, with architecture inspired by historical Kashubian buildings.
When choosing your accommodation, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your trip: culture and remembrance, the architecture of the Checz Nordowych KaszebĂłw, or the winter sledding tradition. Whether you look for a hotel, an apartment or a holiday home depends on your own requirements for service, independence, space and meal planning.
