Religious buildings and their history
The Church of St Anthony of Padua is located in Krywałd. This historic building is protected by the voivodeship heritage conservation authority. A copy of the Piękna Madonna z Knurowa, a sculpture dating from 1420, is kept in the church. Services in honour of the Madonna are held there regularly, once a month. If you would like to include a service in your travel plans, check the date in advance.
Another historical landmark is the Chapel of St Barbara in Knurów. It was built in 1887 with funds provided by Paulina Güttler, owner of the local gunpowder factory, and is considered the oldest religious building in the city. The chapel and the church in Krywałd offer different points of focus for a culture-oriented stay: the former highlights 19th-century architectural history, while the latter is home to a copy of a sculpture dating from 1420 and hosts regular services.
The III Workers’ Housing Estate
The III Workers’ Housing Estate also tells part of Knurów’s history. The estate was built for miners along a road running through Knurów between 1903 and 1921, combining elements of traditional Silesian building styles with English influences. Each home had its own garden plot. Together, the construction period, architecture and garden plots convey how the estate was laid out—a different perspective on the town from that offered by its religious buildings.
If you would like to explore residential and architectural history as well as churches during your trip, you can make the estate a focus in its own right. Its development spanned a longer period than the construction of the Chapel of St Barbara; at the same time, it connects Knurów with the history of the workers’ housing estate built for miners. This allows you to choose places according to their distinct historical themes, rather than treating them as the same kind of attraction.
Leisure spots and a park with a history
The salt grotto, also known as a graduation tower, on Szpitalna Street is considered a landmark and attraction of Knurów. Pamięci Park is now located at the historic cemetery on Spacerowa Street. Both places add other aspects of the townscape to the historic buildings: the graduation tower is a local attraction, while the park’s present-day name preserves the site’s former use as a cemetery.
The Leśne Zacisze outdoor swimming pool is an option for a stay that includes seasonal swimming. It is located in Knurów and operates seasonally. There is also a Metrorower bike-sharing station at the pool. Check the station’s current availability before planning a bike ride, and bear in mind that the outdoor pool is seasonal when planning a visit.
Choose the right focus for your stay
These places allow you to explore Knurów through a range of interests: religious architectural history, the housing estate built for miners, or seasonal leisure. If you are mainly interested in culture and architecture, the chapel, the church in Krywałd and the III Workers’ Housing Estate offer specific themes to guide your choices. If you would like to include an outdoor swimming pool in your plans, its seasonal nature is an important factor to consider.
