Koziegłowy combines medieval history with a distinctive craft tradition and opportunities for active exploration. The town may be of interest for your trip to Poland if you want to combine culture and outdoor activities in one destination: you can choose from historic religious buildings, a castle complex, workshops, and hiking and cycling routes. The reservoir on the town’s recreational grounds is also part of the landscape.

Situated between two streams

Koziegłowy was established between the small streams Sarni Stok and Boży Stok. This location between two named waterways offers a concrete connection to the town’s history and historic layout. Another point of reference is the market square, where the 23-kilometre Przewodziszowice–Koziegłowy cycling route ends. One of the routes described therefore leads directly to a place within the town, without requiring you to plan a longer circular trip.

Castle and medieval traces

The castle and fortified settlement site of Koziegłowy are a medieval monument of historical, archaeological and landscape value. Archaeological excavations uncovered the remains of a gate tower and a residential tower in 2022. These two structures give the site’s history a more tangible form. If you are interested in historic places, Koziegłowy offers more than a general reminder of the Middle Ages: the castle complex brings together archaeological finds and its significance to the town’s history.

Churches and craft tradition

The Church of the Holy Body and St Mary Magdalene was built in the 15th century; its preserved presbytery is part of the present-day church. It also includes an Ogrójec with wooden sculptures of the Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist. St Barbara’s Church houses a Renaissance altar and a historic painting of St Barbara. The town’s history also includes a hospital chapel dedicated to St Barbara, built in 1670 in the northern suburbs. These details range from medieval building history to religious art and a 17th-century chapel.

Crafts also shape Koziegłowy’s cultural identity. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the town’s craft centre was known throughout Poland for jewellery and household items made from aspen shavings. This historical tradition has a present-day connection: Osikowa Dolina holds craft workshops year-round at its premises in Koziegłowy. The workshops are open to children, young people and adults. The town’s former reputation for crafts and its current workshop programme therefore go hand in hand, ensuring that its history is not confined to the past.

Hiking trail, cycling route and reservoir

There are two differently marked routes for active exploration: the yellow-marked Szlak Żarecki is a 21-kilometre hiking trail that passes through Koziegłowy. The Przewodziszowice–Koziegłowy cycling route is 23 kilometres long and ends at the market square. The stated distances are similar; the main difference to consider when choosing is whether you prefer hiking or cycling. An audio tour from the regional tourism portal takes you through the historic centre and complements the routes with a cultural and historical perspective.

Koziegłowy Reservoir is located on the town’s recreational grounds and offers another point of interest if you want to take the surrounding landscape into account when choosing a destination. For local information, the Tourist Information Centre is located at the Municipal and Community Centre for Cultural Promotion, 28 Żarecka Street.
