Background and construction history

The wooden church was built more than 250 years ago; it is considered to be more than 250 years old and is surrounded by old trees and a group of 19th-century graves.

Bełk is documented in the Liber fundationis episcopatus Vratislaviensis under the form “aput Belconem”; the settlement was probably founded under German law at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.

East of Bełk, a copper forge was established on the Bierawka. Copper was rolled into sheets, drawn into wire, and processed into tools and vessels; some of the production was exported. The operation ceased production around 1860.

Historical records associated with Bełk, as well as recorded historical views and buildings, include a palace, a church, a school, former commercial buildings, a sisters’ house, an inn, and a sisters’ foundation on Główna Street.

The wooden Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Bełk is known for the onion-shaped cupolas on its main tower and wooden bell tower; these architectural features distinguish the church.

On the church grounds, an iron Kuna resembling a pillory has been preserved. It formerly served as an instrument of punishment and held people who were punished for minor offenses or were doing penance.
