Caves with different access conditions

Jaskinia Żabia lies in the Podlesice part of the village, on Góra Sulmów. It is 59 metres long, 18.5 metres deep and accessible only with alpine equipment. Jaskinia Berkowa is in the Podlesice part of the village, on Góra Kołoczek. It is 54 metres long; because of its narrow passages, it is difficult to traverse, and more than three-quarters of its length must be covered by crawling. The measurements allow a direct comparison of size, but the access requirements differ considerably: Żabia requires alpine equipment, while Berkowa is characterised by narrow passages and the large proportion that must be crawled. When planning, therefore, the conditions of each cave matter, not just its length. With tourist visits, Jaskinia Głęboka offers a different option: a cave in the local area that is explicitly open to visitors.

Rocks, trails and navigation

Skały Podlesickie lies west of Podlesice. The area is characterised by woodland with numerous gorges and valleys; larger and smaller rock formations may be hidden in the undergrowth. The rock formation “Biblioteka” is located on the summit of Góra Sulmów in Skały Podlesickie and is well known and frequently visited by climbers. Biblioteka is therefore a named spot within a larger rocky area characterised by woodland, terrain cuts and other formations. A green trail passes south of Góra Sulmów and heads west towards Skały Rzędkowickie through Skały Podlesickie. A red trail from the Kroczyce–Żarki road, via Góra Sowią and Apteka, helps with navigation among the rocks. While the description of the green trail highlights its westward route, the red trail provides orientation via the named points. Check trail conditions locally.

Natural heritage and regional history

The area around Krucze Skały was mined for crystalline calcite from the early 1950s onwards. The material, known as spar, was extracted for the glass industry. Thus, alongside the world of caves and rocks, there is also a specific history of mineral extraction. The building of the Jura Natural and Cultural Heritage Centre in Podlesice presents, among other things, the results of entomological, palaeontological and archaeological research from this region. The study of insects, fossils and archaeology offer different disciplinary perspectives on the region. Together with the history of calcite mining, they bring natural and cultural heritage together, without reducing the landscape to its rock formations alone.
