Castles and regional history
The ruins of Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze are a fortification dating from the 14th century. They stand on the Szlak Orlich Gniazd (Eagle Nests Trail) and are part of the Jura’s medieval castle landscape. The TAZ workers’ settlement offers another glimpse into the region’s history: it was built between 1880 and 1910 and is listed with the Katowice Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments as a unique monument under number 1428/91. This means that different historical themes come together in the area—a 14th-century fortification and a workers’ settlement from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The ruins of Smoleń Castle are also among the historic sites in the county. They are located in the Smoleń Nature Reserve, where a Gothic entrance gate has survived. Visitors can access a hiking trail and areas within the ruins: the eastern and western outer baileys, the upper castle and the castle tower. Two marked trails run by the ruins of Bąkowiec Castle in Skarżyce: the red Szlak Orlich Gniazd (Eagle Nests Trail) and the blue Szlak Warowni Jurajskich (Jura Castles Trail). In Zawiercie, the first route of the Szlak 3 Rzek (Three Rivers Trail) starts at the railway station and passes through Blanowice, Kromołów and Bzów.
From spring through autumn, climbing is popular in Zawiercie County, particularly in Podlesice, Rzędkowice, Podzamcze and Ryczów. Cross-country skiing is also possible around Podlesice.
Water is another option for regional outings: in summer, bathing areas are open in Siamoszyce, Dzibice, Kostkowice and Przyłubsko in the Kroczyce municipality. SOWA, a small science centre, is located in the railway station building in Zawiercie at ul. 3 Maja 4. The Municipal Museum Room has been part of the Municipal and County Library since 30 April 1997. It collects, preserves and displays memorabilia from the Zawiercie region. The Museum Room and a branch of the Social Music Centres are located in the attic of Pałacyk Szymańskiego. The city library is on the ground floor, and a private restaurant is in the basement. If you are interested in regional memorabilia, this is one way to place the Museum Room among the city’s cultural attractions.
There are other specific places to visit for different interests: the salt grotto, or brine mist tower, is located on the grounds of the Sports and Recreation Centre in Zawiercie on ul. Moniuszki. At the “Pod Berkową Górą” educational farm in Podlesice, a two- to three-hour course teaches participants how to prepare the traditional potato dish “kluchy połom bite.” The course offers a culinary focus and differs in format from a hike or museum visit.
