Zawiercie lies on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, along the Warta River. River sources, hiking and cycling routes, and sites relating to the town’s history give this destination a varied character. When planning your trip, it is worth considering which themes interest you most: a route to the sources of three rivers, interactive experiments, or insights into regional and industrial history.

Hiking Trails and River Sources

The Szlak 3 Rzek, or Three Rivers Trail, leads to the sources of the Warta, Czarna Przemsza and Blanówka rivers in Zawiercie. Its first variant starts at the railway station and runs through Blanowice, Kromołów and Bzów. This connects the route description with specific stops: in the Kromołów district, a source beneath the chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is one of the main sources of the Warta. The Czarna Przemsza rises in the Bzów district.

The routes of the other trails are also worth considering when choosing your activities. Hiking and cycling routes intersect in Zawiercie, including the red-marked Szlak Orlich Gniazd and the Szlak Warowni Jurajskich. The Three Rivers Trail focuses on river sources; the other routes mentioned show that hiking and cycling are also part of the local trail network. These different options can help you choose an activity suited to your stay.

Railway Station and Hands-on Science

The railway station is not only the starting point for the first variant of the Szlak 3 Rzek. The station building is also home to the Małe Centrum Nauki SOWA, ul. 3 Maja 4. Visitors can explore, discover and experiment independently. At the research stations, they can trigger phenomena, change parameters, and make and verify observations. The exhibits can be touched, and the Majsternia adds construction challenges. If you prefer to try things out for yourself and explore how things work during an outing, SOWA offers a clearly defined alternative to hiking trails and town history.

The rail connections are also relevant when planning your journey. Direct train services run from Zawiercie to the north, including Warsaw and Gdynia, and to the south, including Kraków, Zakopane, Prague, Budapest and Vienna. Connections to Upper and Lower Silesia and eastward, including to Ełk and Suwałki, are also listed. This established pattern of connections gives you an overview of the directions you can travel; specific timetables are a separate matter.

Town History and Exhibition Venues

The Miejska Izba Muzealna collects, preserves and displays mementos from the Zawiercie region. The Galeria MOK offers another way to explore exhibitions: its two-story space is divided into a white area and a black area. The Galeria Stara Łaźnia im. Leszka Dutki has presented paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and industrial design. Together, these institutions offer different points of interest if you would like to shape your stay not only around trails and nature, but also around regional collections and art.

The TAZ workers’ housing estate, which is entered in the register of historic monuments, is part of the area’s industrial history. In addition to multi-family housing for workers, the plans for its construction included public buildings: a school, a hospital, a doctors’ building with a consulting room, a laundry, bathhouses and a bakery. This planning shows the range of functions the estate was intended to serve, without implying that every planned building was actually completed.

Kromołów and the Routes near Bąkowiec

Kromołów links the river landscape with another historic attraction: the medieval marketplace is recommended as a sight along the local route. In Skarżyce, the ruins of Bąkowiec Castle lie beside the red-marked Szlak Orlich Gniazd and the blue-marked Szlak Warowni Jurajskich. If you are interested in routes and historic sites, you can explore several different highlights: the sources and their districts, the marketplace in Kromołów, or the castle ruins along the two marked Jurassic trails.

When choosing your accommodation, you can use these themes to help plan your trip: are you most interested in the starting point of a hiking route, hands-on experiments at SOWA, or the combination of exhibitions and town history? Zawiercie offers several different points of interest. The experiences themselves are found along the trails and at the institutions and sites described here; timetables and your individual travel plans are separate considerations.
