City History and Historical Heritage
The Muzeum Historii Miasta Rzeszowa presents the city’s history from the granting of Magdeburg town rights in 1354 through to the Second World War. The exhibition thus spans the period from medieval town rights to wartime. Anyone interested in Rzeszów’s development will find a different perspective here than at the museums that focus on individual aspects of regional culture or technology.
Religious and architectural landmarks include the Parish Church of Saints Adalbert and Stanislaus, which dates back to the 15th century, and the Bernardine Monastery. The monastery is a pilgrimage destination because of the veneration of the Virgin Mary associated with Our Lady of Rzeszów. The limewood figure is considered miraculous and is attributed to the Kraków school of Wit Stwosz. The former Piarist monastery, in turn, is a rare nationally significant architectural and urban ensemble in Classicist-Baroque forms. The Lubomirski Summer Palace is a late Baroque palace and a work by Tylman van Gameren.
Museums: Regional Culture and Technology
The Muzeum Etnograficzne focuses on the lives of former residents of villages in the Subcarpathian region, including the Rzeszowiacy, Lasowiacy and Pogórzanie. This ethnographic theme complements the city’s history with insights into different population groups and their ways of life, shifting the focus beyond the city’s history to the region’s villages.
The Muzeum Okręgowe has been housed since 1954 in a former Piarist monastery building erected in the mid-17th century. Here, a museum visit can be combined with a look at the building’s historical use, without conflating its architectural history with the subjects on display. The Muzeum Dobranocek has a very different focus: visitors can see original puppets from animated films, along with various objects featuring popular bedtime-story characters.
Anyone interested in technology and vehicles can add the Muzeum Techniki i Militariów to their itinerary. Its collection includes 32 MZ vehicles, as well as historic Polish- and French-made cars from the 1950s. The models mentioned include Warszawa, Syrena and Citroen. These specific vehicle names give the visit a distinctive focus within the museum’s diverse offerings.
Theatre, an Outdoor Pool and Insights into the Cold War
In addition to staging theatre performances, the Teatr im. Wandy Siemaszkowej organises the nationwide Rzeszowskie Spotkania Teatralne and Rzeszowskie Spotkania Karnawałowe festivals. The theatre also hosts the international Biennale Plakatu Teatralnego competition. Those interested in the performing arts can consider these events alongside the museums when planning their trip.
The municipal outdoor swimming pool Żwirownia has a sandy beach and a designated shallow-water area for small children. A very different kind of experience is offered by the “Marysieńka” shelter, where visitors can explore several underground rooms of the nuclear shelter. There they can see original equipment and military gear from the Cold War era. In Rzeszów, interests can thus range from a visit to an outdoor pool with small children to learning about more recent military history.
