Działdowo combines medieval history with distinctive architecture and opportunities to explore the surrounding area by bike. If you are planning a stay, you can make historic places and routes around the town different focal points of your trip. The first defensive structure in the area of Działdowo was built by the Teutonic Order in 1306—a landmark in the town’s early history.

Old Town and the history of the Teutonic Order

At the centre of the Old Town is the square marketplace. The town hall at its centre dates from 1796. The original medieval street layout of the Old Town has also been preserved. On a walk, the layout of the town centre and individual historic buildings sit side by side, so the town’s history is not confined to a single building.

The Teutonic Castle in Działdowo is part of the “Szlak Zamków Gotyckich” (Route of Gothic Castles). The Gothic wing of the castle houses the Muzeum Pogranicza at 12 Zamkowa Street. Since September 2018, visitors have been able to see the exhibition “Działdowo – miasto i ludzie dawnego pogranicza” (Działdowo – the town and people of the former borderland). Check the latest visitor information before your trip if you plan to visit the museum.

Churches and architectural history

Two churches offer further insights into Działdowo’s architectural history. St. Adalbert’s Church was built in 1862 in the Neo-Gothic style. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is considered the oldest church in the town; its foundations date back to the Middle Ages. Together, the two buildings reflect different historical periods: one has a clearly stated construction date and Neo-Gothic style, while the other has medieval foundations and is regarded as the oldest church.

City walk or cycle routes

If you would like to explore Działdowo on foot, a town tour launched in April 2026 describes a walk with a museum guide. A narrator and a museum employee supplemented the route with stories about important places and sights in the town. Without a code, only one of the 15 possible routes was available. As app availability and access conditions may change, check the latest information before your trip.
