Karwie – Village History and Lake Karwie

Karwie combines a well-documented village history with a landscape of forests and lake. Karwie’s History and Historic Buildings

One early written account is dated September 25, 1555. On that day, Georg von Diebes, starost of Ryn and Szestno, sold four sołectwo hides in the place then known as Karffen to Matz von Mertinsdorf, or Maciej from Marcinkowo, for 198 marks. At the same time, the village was required to be settled with 40 hides (668 ha). The transaction thus linked the sale with the obligation to settle the village with 40 hides (668 ha). The historic name Karffen belongs to this account of the time; the present-day name of the village is Karwie.

Several brick residential buildings are associated with different periods. The building at Karwie 3 dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. The manor house at Karwie 9 dates from the 1920s, while the residential building at Karwie 14 is attributed to the early 20th century.
