Kozłowo between manor history and nature

Kozłowo combines a long history as a manor estate with its location in several protected areas. The village lies within the Puszcza Piska Natura 2000 site, and a protected former manor park has also been preserved. This gives you two focal points for planning your trip: the development of a manor settlement and the landscape. From Land Grant to Manor Settlement

Kozłowo originated in the so-called Wildenow area: in 1388, Grand Master Konrad Zöllner von Rothenstein granted Philipp Wildenaw 350 włóks there under Kulm law. In 1483, the estate was divided between Maciej Wyselin and Piotr Wildenaw; the division gave rise to the Kozłowo and Rybno estates. The two dates mark distinct stages—a land grant and a later division—and give the manor’s history a chronological arc.

Social history and the village’s layout are also part of the story. Before 1740, a one-class school was founded in Kozłowo under the patronage of the nobility; the buildings developed in a form typical of a manor settlement. The school represents a specific historical institution, while the typical buildings reflect the development of the village as a whole.

Manor Park and Palace History

A protected former manor park dating from the 18th or 19th century has been preserved in Kozłowo. It is listed in the regional register of immovable monuments under registration number A-1490; the entry is dated October 26, 1983. The palace of the former estate was partially damaged by a fire in 2007. The park and palace reflect different aspects of the former estate: a preserved complex and a specific, dated change.

Bread, Honey, and Milk as a Festival Theme

The Święto Chleba, Miodu i Mleka on May 23, 2026, was scheduled to include a bread-baking demonstration, beekeeping workshops, and tastings of dishes made with milk and honey; the village sports field in Kozłowo was planned as the venue.

Protected Areas and Birdlife

Kozłowo lies within the Puszcza Piska Natura 2000 site. Part of the village also lies within the Ostoja Piska Natura 2000 habitat protection area, and part is also within the Rzeka Babant i Jezioro Białe landscape and nature complex. These three designations differ in type and extent: Puszcza Piska encompasses Kozłowo, while Ostoja Piska and the landscape and nature complex each cover only part of the village.

A specialist nature survey conducted in 2011 recorded a total of 84 bird species across an area of 690 ha in the Kozłowo area, including 14 species listed in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive. These include the lesser spotted eagle, western marsh harrier, black kite, red kite, European honey buzzard, Montagu’s harrier, white-tailed eagle, white stork, black stork, common crane, black woodpecker, middle spotted woodpecker, red-backed shrike, and woodlark.
