Mikolajki – Waterfront Paths, Culture and the Masurian Lakes

Promenade, harbour and waterside paths

The 1.3-kilometre-long promenade is the town’s main tourist route. Along the promenade, you will find restaurants, taverns, cafés and shops, as well as watersports equipment rental, sailing harbours and a passenger boat harbour. The town harbour extends along almost the entire length of the promenade, which was modernised in 2022. This route connects different aspects of local life with the harbour area.

Two routes have their own distinct focus. “Zwiedzamy Mikołajki” is 4.7 kilometres long and leads to the town’s main sights. The 4.9-kilometre “Wzdłuż jeziora Mikołajskiego” route passes through Mikołajki and the surrounding forest, crosses a footbridge to the western shore of the lake and follows the water. From there, you can look out over the town.

Marked cycling routes also start and finish in Mikołajki. If you prefer to plan a circular route, this offers another way to include the town as both the starting point and destination of a ride. The walking and cycling routes differ in their stated form: one leads to sights, while the other is designated as a circular route.

Cultural history and local traditions

The Muzeum Reformacji Polskiej documents the Reformation movement in Poland and Masuria, as well as the history of Mikołajki. Its collection includes numerous old prints, photographs and other documents. For visitors interested in regional history, the museum offers a distinct perspective on the town’s past and the history of the Reformation in the region.

Another cultural and historical landmark is the Kościół Ewangelicko-Augsburski Świętej Trójcy. The Protestant church was built in 1842 in the Neoclassical style, based on a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Visitors interested in architecture can explore it as part of the town’s history.

Mikołajki’s traditions also include the “Festiwal Szantowy” and Dni Mikołajek. The festival has been held for more than 40 years; around the turn of July and August, sailing music can be heard on the shore of Jezioro Mikołajskie. During Dni Mikołajek, the “Król Sielaw” is launched into the water each year. The ceremony depicts an episode from the legend associated with Mikołajki.

Water activities and excursions

For families, Baseny Letnie w Mikołajkach is a water and leisure complex with spacious outdoor pools and a varied water playground for young children. The municipal bathing beach in Mikołajki has showers and lifeguard supervision. Both options focus on the water, but in different ways: outdoor pools and a playground at one, and a bathing beach at the other.

Full-day passenger boat trips run from Mikołajki to Giżycko, Ryn or Ruciane-Nida. This is one way to include other towns in your travel plans by boat. Mikołajki is also on the “Szlak białych żagli” route through the Great Masurian Lakes, which runs through Węgorzewo, Giżycko, Ryn and Mikołajki, among other places.

In the surrounding area, you can fish in lakes and canals with the appropriate licence. You can choose either a general licence valid for numerous lakes and canals or a licence for a specific designated lake. If fishing is important to your trip, take these different types of licence into account when planning.

For a fun activity, you can play the outdoor game “Mikołajska Pętla Czasu” in Mikołajki using an app or a paper version. The paper version is available from the tourist information office or can be printed out yourself.
