Olecko brings together Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie and a multifaceted history. At the lake, water sports, fishing and paths through the landscape take centre stage; in the city, historic buildings, exhibitions and events reveal other sides of the place. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether you mainly want to spend time by the water or also explore the city’s cultural offerings. Olecko offers specific options for these different interests.

Lake, Water and Paths

Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie is considered a sielawa-type lake and attracts anglers. The lake is also the starting point for a scenic kayaking route on the Lega. For a walk, the Dolina Pluskwianki educational trail offers a route of about 7 km: it leads through the valleys of the Pluskwianka River to the lake. WiewiĂłrcza ĹšcieĹĽka, by contrast, is a 12 km cycling and walking route. Information boards about nature education for children and young people line the route. The different lengths and themes can help you choose activities for your stay.

Skocznia beach lies on Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie. Its facilities include a pier, a diving platform, a water slide, a beach volleyball court, a WOPR station, a bar and a water sports equipment rental. There is also a water sports equipment rental at the beach beside Olecko’s city pier. Another landmark on the lake is the pier with a diving platform, built around 1930; it is part of a listed sports, leisure and cultural centre in Olecko.

Cityscape and Cultural History

The historic urban layout from the 16th to the 19th century includes the market square and adjoining streets. It has been entered in the heritage register since 8 November 1956 under registration number A-181. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is also one of the city’s important historic buildings: it was built in 1859–1861 and has been listed since 15 December 1989 under registration number A-2963. Inside are a wooden Neo-Gothic main altar from the second half of the 19th century, two matching side altars, a Neo-Gothic pulpit and a baptismal font from the same period.

The Olecka Izba Historyczna features a permanent exhibition on the history of Olecko. On display are objects, documents and photographs relating to Olecko or the Olecki County. The Izba also holds monthly meetings about the history of the city and region. The present-day building of the former Starosty stands on the site of a 17th-century castle that was destroyed by fire in 1822. The Regionalna Izba Pamięci is on the building’s second floor.

Another historic site is the city park between Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie and Gołdapska Street. It has a sporting and recreational character; its historic diving platforms in the bathing area are considered unique in the wider region. If you are interested in regional traditions, the Mazurskie Spotkania z Folklorem festival is also part of Olecko’s cultural life. It has been held since 1998 and focuses on traditional crafts, music, singing and folk dance. At the 2025 festival, the programme included stalls selling homemade food and culinary workshops on Masurian specialities.
