A kayak route on the Marózka starts in Waplewo. In addition, the Olsztynek tourism portal describes an excursion of about 36 km from Olsztynek via Waplewo to Maróz, made by car or bicycle. The approximate distance applies to this excursion, not to the kayak route. For Waplewo, the portal recommends visiting the church, the new school and the 1914 military cemetery. This lets you plan the start of the kayak route and the stops on the overland excursion as two distinct options: one focuses on the route on the water, while the other involves travelling between Olsztynek, Waplewo and Maróz by car or bicycle.
A Church with a Dated Predecessor
The brick church in Waplewo was built in 1870, replacing an older wooden building. It is still standing. The sequence of the wooden building and the brick structure makes the history of the church tangible: the older place of worship was followed by a building with a specific construction date. The church thus provides a clear historical reference point among the sites described in the village and its surroundings. The year 1870 can also be compared with the period dating of two other cemeteries, which date from the second half of the 19th century.
The 1914 Military Cemetery

Two Other Historic Cemetery Sites
North of Waplewo, by the E-7, is a Catholic cemetery dating from the second half of the 19th century, visible from the road. Some 200 m south of Waplewo, remains of a Protestant cemetery from the same period can be found beside a field track. The two sites differ in their religious affiliation, location and condition: one is described as a Catholic cemetery, while the other is specifically described as the remains of a Protestant cemetery. Their shared date range connects them without obscuring their distinct characteristics. By comparison, the military cemetery is dated to 1914, while the church has the precise construction year of 1870. These different historical reference points help place Waplewo’s history in context.
