Town Hall, Church and Historic Landmarks

The Gothic town hall stands in the centre of the old town. It was originally built between around 1360 and 1380, was damaged by fires and rebuilt several times over the course of its history, yet has retained its medieval character. Today, the town hall houses the tourist information office, an art gallery and the “Ratuszowe Piwnice” Museum. The building thus brings together several cultural functions under one roof; its architectural history also offers its own window onto the city’s past.

Other buildings and monuments also reflect different historical periods. The Gothic parish church of Saints Peter and Paul was built from the early 14th to the early 16th century. In front of DohnĂłw Palace stands a Baroque sundial made of sandstone in 1741: its form consists of cubes and spheres stacked on top of one another. If you are interested in architectural details, you will find two different periods and styles here, without needing to combine them into a single route.

The history of the Herder Monument spans several dates: an earlier monument was erected in 1854 and disappeared in 1945. The present monument was unveiled in 1964 and is a gift from the German Ministry of Culture. The Morąg water tower has a different history: built in 1906, it features Neo-Gothic elements and now houses a café. Together, these places offer different perspectives on Morag’s architecture and culture of remembrance.

Wetland and Birdlife

The Morąskie Rozlewisko is a 121.7-hectare wetland and ecological reserve with a diverse range of wetland flora and fauna. Around 150 bird species are found in the area, including several species unique to Europe. A roughly 3 km-long educational trail runs along the southern side, with information boards along the way. During migration season, flocks of bean geese, barnacle geese and greylag geese regularly gather there. The approximate length of the trail and the information boards can help you factor this nature-focused activity into your day’s plans; migration season also offers a particular seasonal highlight for birdwatching.
