Townscape and historic buildings
Dobra preserves its medieval town layout. The townscape is characterized by half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, whose wooden elements display Biedermeier and Art Nouveau stylistic features. The medieval layout and the houses built later make different historical layers of the town visible. St. Clare’s Church is in the northwestern part of the town. Designed in the Late Gothic style, it is a three-aisled, four-bay hall and has a tower in the Neo-Gothic style. The church thus brings together two distinct architectural styles in one building. The ruins of the von Devitz family castle are also among the town’s most important historic attractions.
The Taber guesthouse is also a notable part of the town’s history: it is considered the oldest building still in use in Dobra and stands on the market square on Kościuszki Street. The market square is also the starting point of the Szlak Olbrzymów. In this area, a historic building and the beginning of a trail that connects local history with nature and archaeology come together.
The Szlak Olbrzymów: Nature and archaeology
The Szlak Olbrzymów is a four-kilometer nature and history trail. Among its key points is the Żurawi Ostrów hillfort on the Czapla Szyja peninsula. The peninsula is the trail’s main attraction; remains of a 6th-century pile settlement were found there. Those interested in early settlement history will find a special historical connection to the landscape around Dobra here.
The archaeological history goes back even further: in the Middle Ages, a 170-meter-long pile bridge stood by the Żurawi Ostrów hillfort. It connected the Czapla Szyja peninsula with a rise on the opposite bank. The wooden structures unearthed there are currently being examined archaeologically. North of Dobra, the Szlak Olbrzymów includes the valley of the Dobrzenica River. The landscape there features valley slopes covered with meadows and forests. The trail passes habitats for waterbirds and remarkable old trees. The nearby Leśne Lake covers 1.7 hectares and offers a viewpoint along the Szlak Olbrzymów; it is also a refuge for wetland birds. These aspects of the landscape complement the trail’s archaeological themes with a look at habitats and nature.
Town lake and beach
The town lake and beach in Dobra offer another way to add a different theme to your stay. They are 700 meters from the town and have a volleyball court, a beach soccer field and a brick fire pit.
