Swinoujscie: Beach, Island Routes and Fortress History

Swinoujscie (Świnoujście) can be explored from different perspectives: coastal scenery, routes on and between islands, and structures with maritime and military history. The beach stretches across Uznam and Wolin and is 10 kilometers long in total; 3.7 kilometers are on Uznam and 6 kilometers on Wolin.

Coast, Park and Promenades

The breakwaters are also a distinctive feature of the coastline. They date from the early 19th century. The western breakwater is topped by the windmill-shaped sea marker “Młyny,” while the central breakwater extends more than 1,400 meters out into the sea. The beach and structures represent two different aspects of the coast: the long beach and maritime infrastructure.

Zdrojowy Park offers another green touch. It dates from the 19th century and was laid out according to a design by landscape architect Peter Josef Lenné. Its features include Mediterranean vegetation and trees said to be about 150 years old.

On Promenada Zdrowia, the paths for pedestrians, cyclists and roller skaters are separated from one another. A line of dunes separates the promenade from the sea. Landscape architecture, outdoor fitness equipment, drinking fountains, a fountain and bicycle racks complement the paths; there are also playgrounds and an amusement park. This area thus combines exercise with other outdoor activities.

Another, cross-border beach promenade is 12.5 kilometers long. It runs through the green spaces of Swinoujscie as well as Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin; in many places, it offers views of the sea. This makes it possible to view the town as part of a longer route that crosses the border and passes through several named places.

Hiking Trails, Cycling Route and Water Sports

Swinoujscie has numerous hiking trails, between 4 and 20 kilometers long, for walks and Nordic walking. One named cycling route is ROUND KARSIBÓR: about 21 kilometers long, it leads through reed beds, meadows and forests on Karsibór Island. It runs along the Piast Canal to the new eastern breakwater, which extends 430 meters into the Szczecin Lagoon.

The pump track on Grunwaldzka Street offers a different kind of cycling. This enclosed circuit is designed for acrobatic cycling and features fast turns and rollers. The options therefore include paths for walking and Nordic walking, a longer route through the landscape of Karsibór, and a circuit for riding over rollers and around bends.

Swinoujscie offers good conditions for windsurfing, kitesurfing and skimboarding. Sailing events and regattas are also held in the waters around the town. These include the Sea Days Regatta, the Tourist Regatta, the Unity Line Regatta and Sail Świnoujście. Sailboats can be seen at Sail Świnoujście. Museum, Fortifications and History

The Muzeum Rybołówstwa Morskiego is housed in the former town hall. Its collections cover the history of fishing, the town and the region; they also include old navigation instruments and exhibits on marine fauna. The museum hosts numerous exhibitions.

Fort Anioła was built between 1854 and 1858, modeled on the Mausoleum of Hadrian in Rome. The Swinoujscie Lighthouse also dates from 1858; it houses an exhibition on lighthouses and sea rescue. Fort Wschodni (Gerharda) is one of three surviving 19th-century fortifications in the Świnoujście Fortress. It features an exhibition about the fortifications and recovered artifacts.

Podziemne Miasto consists of shelters connected by a kilometer of tunnels. During the Second World War, the complex served as a coastal defense battery; after the war, it was a command post for the Polish military. The Gothic church on Karsibór Island offers a different perspective on history. It dates from the 15th century and has, among other things, a 15th-century altar and a 17th-century pulpit.

The FAMA Festival is also connected with the town’s history: it has been held in Świnoujście since 1966 and prompted the expansion of the amphitheater. Together with the exhibitions and historic sites, it shows the different ways to explore culture and history in Swinoujscie.
