Church History in Malechowo
The Gothic Church of Our Lady of Candlemas in Malechowo is dedicated to Our Lady of Candlemas and dates from the 16th century. The main altar, pulpit and baptismal font were added in the 17th century. The building and its furnishings therefore date from different centuries, offering a specific opportunity to compare periods within the same church.
The church’s denominational history adds another layer to this picture: after 1534, it served as a Protestant church; in 1945, it was taken over by the Catholics. The construction date, later furnishings and changes in use thus represent different historical layers of the church.
Churches and Early History Nearby
In nearby Ostrowiec stands the Church of the Holy Cross, a single-nave brick and stone building dating from the 15th century. The Gothic Church of St Joseph in Karwice dates from the 14th century. Compared with the church in Malechowo, St Joseph can be placed in an earlier period; Ostrowiec adds a point of comparison through its single-nave design and combination of brick and stone.
An even older point of reference lies in Borkowo: there you will find megalithic tombs that are approximately 5,000 years old and belong to the Funnel Beaker culture. Their approximate age and cultural attribution provide two different ways to distinguish this site from the churches dating from the 14th to 16th centuries.
The Lake and Activities Nearby
At 47 hectares, the lake near Ostrowiec is the largest glacial lake in the municipality of Malechowo. It is a ribbon lake and also a flow-through lake.
In Grabowo, there is a kayak landing and a fishing spot with tourist facilities, including a leisure shelter, a fire pit and benches. If you plan to visit, check the condition of the facilities beforehand.
At the educational farm in Paproty, the challenge in the “Paprockie zwierzaki” game is to make your way through a large hedge maze and then reach the maze tower. If you want to plan this activity specifically, check in advance whether it is currently available.
Music events are another distinctive cultural feature. At least the 14th and 16th editions of “Folkowe Śpiewanie im. Jana Świderskiego” have taken place in Ostrowiec. The 14th edition took place in 2024; 15 folk music groups competed at the 16th edition.
