Środa Wielkopolska: Gothic Church, Old Town and Reservoir
Accommodation in Środa Wielkopolska
Środa Wielkopolska offers several different points of interest for your trip to Poland: a Late Gothic collegiate church, a town centre with a medieval heritage, a reservoir, and destinations for cycling and nature enthusiasts. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first weigh up the themes you want to shape your trip: architecture and urban history, water-based recreation, or the landscape within the municipality.

Churches, Market Square and Urban History
The Collegiate Church of the Assumption of Mary is a prominent part of the town’s history. The Late Gothic brick building was constructed between 1423 and 1428. The church also had political significance: during the First Polish Republic, regional assemblies of the Poznań and Kalisz voivodeships were held there. Its architecture and historical function offer two different perspectives on the same building—its period of construction and its role in the public life of the region at the time.
The historic centre retains its original street layout within the former town fortifications. Stary Rynek is the surviving market square of the medieval town. Together, the street plan and the market tell the story of the older urban structure, though the two aspects do not mean the same thing: one points to the layout of the town, the other to its former market square. Those interested in urban history will find more than a single historic building to guide their exploration.
Another architectural trace is the former Protestant church on Wiosny Ludów Street. It is Neo-Romanesque and was built from 1881 to 1888. Near the water tower in Środa Wielkopolska, there is also a monument to General Jan Henryk Dąbrowski, erected in 1997. It is considered the first monument of its kind in Poland; it was designed by Robert Sobociński. The collegiate church, former Protestant church and monument differ in function, style and date of construction, adding to the picture of local architectural history.
Reservoir and Recreation in Town
A man-made reservoir lies north of the town. It was created by damming the Moskawa between 1968 and 1971 and has a geodetic area of 47.7 hectares. The lake primarily serves as a recreation area for the residents of Środa Wielkopolska. Beach volleyball courts are also available for local recreation: two sand courts are next to a tennis court, and two more are directly on the shore of Lake Średzkie. If you plan to use the courts, check the current conditions beforehand.
The lake offers a different focus from the historic buildings. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you are more interested in the town’s history or in water and recreation—or whether you would like to include both aspects in your exploration of Środa Wielkopolska.
Cycling Route, Narrow-Gauge Railway and Museum
The Transwielkopolska Cycling Route passes through Środa Wielkopolska. Cycling is therefore another established point of interest, although the route information alone does not indicate its length or riding conditions. The historic Środa Wielkopolska–Zaniemyśl narrow-gauge railway connects the two towns. If you are planning a journey, check the current service in advance.
The Środa Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum is located in the ŚRODA WIELKOPOLSKA MIASTO station building. This gives the town a connection to railway history in addition to the link between Środa Wielkopolska and Zaniemyśl. If you are planning a museum visit, check current access arrangements. This will help you distinguish the historic railway connections from a specific journey or visit and plan accordingly.
Landscape Within the Municipality
The municipality also has natural features: in the southwest, the Struga Średzka forms the extensive Bagna Średzkie wetlands, a protected landscape area. Rare and protected bird species occur there, including herons, mute swans, grebes, black-headed gulls, lapwings and penduline tits. These areas are within the municipality of Środa Wielkopolska, providing a regional complement to the attractions in the town itself. The bird species mentioned illustrate the character of the protected area; they are not a guarantee that you will see them on any particular visit.
When looking for accommodation, you can weigh up these different travel interests: urban history and architecture, recreation at the reservoir, the cycling route, or the landscape within the municipality. Środa Wielkopolska offers specific themes that differ from one another and can help you decide which aspects to explore further on your trip.
