Culture and history

The protected historical ensemble of the Benedictine Abbey of Lubiń includes the monastery church under the patronage of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the monastery buildings, a park, a garden, and St. Leonard’s Church. The Annales Lubinenses are the oldest surviving original monument of Polish historiography.

St. Leonard’s Church in Lubiń was built at the beginning of the 13th century as a foundation of the local Benedictine monastery. It was expanded in 1549–1556 and again around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Romanesque wall sections made of granite blocks have been preserved inside; its Gothic sections are made of brick.

The oldest known musical notation in Poland comes from the holdings of the Lubiń library.

Nature and publicly accessible areas

The monastery park in Lubiń covers approximately 2 hectares and was laid out around 1715. In front of St. Leonard’s Church stands a chestnut tree protected as a natural monument, with a trunk circumference of 520 cm and a height of 25 m.

For individual visitors, the church, the area around the chestnut tree in front of the church, the French garden by the abbey’s large metal gate, the toilet in the monastery courtyard, and the pilgrim square behind the church are publicly accessible.
