Ostromecko brings together several very different stories: an 18th-century castle, a brick railway station ensemble dating from around the turn of the century, and exhibitions about pianos and owls. There are also panoramic views of the Vistula and Fordon. When planning your stay, you can use these themes as a guide: should you focus on architectural history, special collections or a longer hiking route?

Palace history and historic ensembles

The Old Palace in Ostromecko was built around 1730 by the Mostowski family. Its architectural history therefore dates back to the first half of the 18th century. At the New Palace, the exhibition “Huhuczny strych” offers a very different focus: it presents a collection of 8,000 owls. As the exhibition’s availability may change, please check before your trip.

Buildings away from the palaces also tell the story of the area’s development. The historic railway station ensemble dates from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It includes the brick station building, an ancillary building, two workers’ houses and a railway viaduct. Another surviving ensemble comprises three historic buildings associated with the “Ostromecko” mineral water factory, known as “Ostromecko-Zdrój.” Together, these places show different facets of local architectural and industrial history, although they do not represent the same period or purpose.

Exhibitions with their own themes

At the Sommerfeld Warehouse, you can view piano and upright piano components up close in a workshop-style exhibition. The instruments the parts came from were specially dismantled. The exhibition includes eleven exhibits, among them the Carmen accordion, with factory number 0001. This makes the visit different in theme from the palace and railway station ensembles: here, the focus is on individual instruments and their components.

When planning your explorations, it is worth distinguishing between these different areas of focus: palace history, railway architecture, the historic water factory and the instrument exhibition each represent a theme of their own. This way, you can choose which stops interest you most, rather than seeing Ostromecko only through a single landmark.

Castle park, Vistula views and hiking trail

The named paths in Ostromecko Castle Park include Aleja Schinkla, Aleja Lennégo, Aleja Alvenslebenów and Aleja Mostowskich. Their names offer a practical point of reference when exploring the park and its paths. From the area below the palace, there are panoramic views of the Vistula and Fordon. This means that landscape and architecture sit side by side in Ostromecko: the view takes in the river and the city, while the palaces and park paths offer another way to experience the place.

For a longer hike, the black Szlak Orlich Gniazd trail is another way to include Ostromecko in your plans. It runs from Ostromecko to Kamieniec and is 14.8 kilometres long. The stated distance helps you gauge the scope of this hike. Check the trail’s current markings before setting out.
