Chrzanów: Market Square History, Museum and Jewish Heritage
Accommodation in Chrzanów
If you’re looking for a hotel in Chrzanów, choosing what to see can shape how you experience the city: a preserved medieval market square, a museum in a 16th-century building, church art and the history of the Jewish community reveal different sides of the place. For planning, it’s worth keeping these themes distinct—from the city’s layout to its collections and a self-guided walk.
The Market Square as a Historic Landmark
Chrzanów preserves the medieval, grid-like layout of its Market Square. Streets branch off from it, and it was once the center of urban life. The square offers a starting point for understanding the city’s historic structure before you turn to individual buildings and collections.
The Muzeum w Chrzanowie also showcases the history of crafts and trade. Among the objects on display are books and seals, a counter shaped like a book, guild emblems, a sash and the banner of the butchers’ guild. Together with the other objects, they offer insight into different forms of urban craft and trade.
The Muzeum w Chrzanowie and Its Collections
The museum is housed in the Lamus Dworski, a building dating from the 16th century. The Chrzanów exhibition displays two of the five town books in the museum’s collection. They date from 1908 to 1936. As exhibition displays may change, check before your visit whether these items are currently on view.
Another part of the exhibition is a model of a church and its immediate surroundings at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The church furnishings on display also include chalices and a paten. The model and sacred objects complement the themes of urban development and everyday life with a glimpse of ecclesiastical spaces and furnishings.
Jewish Heritage and the Cemetery
One of the museum’s most valuable collections is its Judaica collection. It presents the material and spiritual culture of the Jewish community, which made up more than half of the city’s population until the outbreak of the Second World War. The Jewish cemetery in Chrzanów dates back to the mid-18th century and preserves evidence of Jewish burial culture.
Many tombstones feature symbolic imagery; some of the most richly decorated date from the early 19th century. The inscriptions are almost exclusively in Hebrew. Several dozen tombstones also bear texts in Yiddish, German and Polish. The different languages and designs make the cemetery a tangible way to explore the community’s history.
For organized groups, the museum offers educational walks and guided tours of the cemetery from April 15 to October 15. In favorable weather, they may exceptionally be available outside this period as well. The programs take place during museum opening hours, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; reservations are accepted by phone. Confirm dates and availability with the museum before your visit.
Church Art and a Self-Guided Walk
St. Nicholas Church combines a Gothic presbytery with a Baroque Chapel of St. Stanislaus. The church also contains a mosaic of the Madonna and Child. Pope Leo XIII gave it to Henryk Loewenfeld in 1888, and Loewenfeld donated it to the church. The architecture and mosaic belong to different artistic periods, offering two distinct perspectives on the same church.
If you’d like to explore Chrzanów at your own pace, consider the self-guided quest Śladami Loewenfelda. Henryk Loewenfeld guides you through the city’s history from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The walk takes less than two hours and starts at the main entrance of the Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna, 10C Broniewskiego Street. Before setting out, check whether the quest is currently available to download or in the app.
Chrzanów is also located on the Szlak Miejsc Papieskich na Ziemi Chrzanowskiej. When planning your trip, you can include this named route as another point of interest alongside the city and museum themes.
