Zagórze: Nature and Pilgrimage History in the Jura

Zagórze lies on the western edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The area can be explored through three specific themes: protected nature, trails through Zagórze and its religious history. When choosing a destination, these highlights can help you identify your interests: Bukowica is known for its forest and geology, while chapels and pilgrimage routes bring its historical connections to light.

Nature and Landscapes Around Zagórze

Part of the Zagórze sołectwo (village administrative unit) lies within Tenczyński Landscape Park. The Bukowica Nature Reserve is located within the protected part of this sołectwo. The reserve contains a stand of Carpathian beech forest with old beech trees. There is also an outcrop of Triassic limestone several metres long. The forest and rock represent different aspects of nature that you can discover as you learn about the landscape. “Triassic” refers to the Triassic Period, a geological period.

Another distinctive landform is the “Małe Gaje” loess ravine. It lies on the slopes of Garb Tęczyński, in the northern part of Zagórze. Together with the beech forest and limestone outcrop, it shows that the area’s natural features take different forms: forest, rock and ravine each make up a distinct landscape.

Hiking, Cycling and Pilgrimage Routes

The yellow Jura Valleys Hiking Trail “im. JP II” (named after John Paul II) passes through Zagórze and the Bukowica Nature Reserve. The blue circular route in the vicinity of Babice is a separate trail that also passes through Zagórze and is designated as a cycling route. A third route, the “Szlak Miejsc Papieskich na Ziemi Chrzanowskiej” (Trail of Papal Sites in the Chrzanów Region), also passes through the area. These routes cater to different interests: hiking, cycling, and religious and historical themes. If you plan your trip based on the type of route, this distinction is more useful than a general description that treats all routes as the same.

Chapels and History

The historic Chapel of Our Lady of the Nursing Breast dates from the early 19th century and is listed in the municipal register of monuments. Many religious ceremonies have taken place in the chapel, including some attended by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła. Another chapel in Zagórze-Góry commemorates Wojtyła’s visit to Zagórze. Together with the “Szlak Miejsc Papieskich na Ziemi Chrzanowskiej,” these details provide a specific link to the area’s religious history; the two chapels are distinct places of remembrance.

Grodzisko Duże offers another historical perspective. It dates from the 7th to the 11th century and has surviving fragments of a fortification. This adds an older history of fortifications to the religious sites of remembrance. Zagórze also has a fishing pond.
