The name Osiek derives from “osiek,” a term for a place with a forest fortress built from tree trunks. Osiek was first mentioned in 1408; the oldest document naming the village dates from 1435. The two dates represent different historical reference points: the first mention and the oldest surviving document with the village’s name.

The church’s construction history and the parish’s history also have their own dates. The Church of Our Lady Queen of the World (Najświętszej Marii Panny Królowej Świata) was built from 1974 to 1978. The parish of Our Lady Queen of the World (NMP Królowej Świata) was established by Bishop Jan Jaroszewicz on 1 March 1979. Next to the church, in front of the rectory, is a contemporary chapel with a statue of Mary. A stone pillar with a cross in front of the church bears an inscription that probably names the donor, Bigay Woyciech, and refers to 1687.

Several old wooden houses have been preserved in Osiek. The village is also among those with historically valuable settlement patterns and a valuable open landscape. Together, these details shape the character of the village, which can be seen both in individual buildings and in the settlement pattern.

Cycling Routes with Different Itineraries

The described cycling routes differ mainly in how they include Osiek. The “Szlak Kordonu Granicznego” forms a loop just over 20 kilometres long; its northern section runs below Osiek. An orange-marked cycling route starts at a forest crossroads below the village and continues through Osiek. The route descriptions therefore provide different points of reference: a loop with a section below the village, and a route that passes through it.

The blue “Wokół Olkusza” cycling route runs from Olkusz through Bukowno and Wapiennik to Osiek, then on to Witeradów and back to Olkusz. This makes Osiek part of a longer route described in detail. The Silver Juggler Trail is an educational and historical trail in the old town featuring 18 miner figures. The trail includes more than 130 replicas of Olkusz Trojaks, coins bearing the image of King Sigismund III Vasa, set into the pavement. The Basilica of St Andrew stands out in particular for its art history: it is a Gothic church dating from the turn of the 14th century, built in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Its most valuable work of art is a late-15th-century Gothic winged altarpiece, one of only four such altarpieces in Poland.

“Podziemny Olkusz” (“Underground Olkusz”) presents another side of the city’s history in underground rooms: one exhibition is in the former 14th-century town hall, and another is in the former Royal Quarter, once the seat of the Olkusz mining authorities. For an active break, Silver Park, a leisure and landscape park, offers opportunities for active recreation for children, young people and adults. The city game “Zagadki olkuskiej starówki” (“Mysteries of Olkusz’s Old Town”) follows a route of about 1.5 kilometres through Olkusz’s old town. These attractions are in Olkusz and should be considered separately from the local focus on Osiek.
