Hiking Trails and Views around Maków Podhalański
A blue hiking trail leads from Maków Podhalański railway station via ul. Orkana to the bridge over the Skawa, then continues through Grzechynia Zagórze and Ostra Góra to the eastern slope of Magurka. This route is listed as approximately 7.5 km long. It provides a clear point of reference if you are looking for a trail that starts in town and passes through named waypoints.
A PTTK-marked blue trail also leads from Sucha Beskidzka to Maków Podhalański: from the bus station via Mioduszyna and the Piatkówka settlement to the railway station. The route is approximately 10.8 km long. In Maków, it passes the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Maków and crosses the market square on its way to the railway station. The route follows the ridge of Mioduszyna, passes through the Polana settlement and by the summit of Góra Polany (611 m above sea level), then heads towards the Makowska Góra settlement. From the slope of Makowska Góra, there are views of the Jałowieckie Range and the Babia Góra Range; farther north, the Chełm Range is also visible.
Another marked option is the green PTTK hiking trail, which runs for approximately 10.5 km from Maków Podhalański via Makowska Góra and Budzów to Chełm Wschodni. The yellow trail, also marked by the PTTK, is considerably longer at approximately 27 km and runs via Ostrysz, Przysłopski Wierch, Koskowa Góra and Góra Kotoń to Pcim. The approximate distances and different waypoints make it easier to compare the routes described by their length and the landscapes they pass through.
Art, Handicrafts and Historical Traces
The E. Wacyk Regional Room displays folk art by embroiderers and sculptors, wooden toys and household items from earlier times. Photographs and documents focus on the history of Maków Podhalański and its surroundings. The collection thus brings together everyday history and handicrafts, while the Mieczysław Głuch Author’s Gallery focuses on the wooden sculptures of one artist: its sacred, modernist and classical figures offer different perspectives on this medium.
The local craft tradition includes Maków embroidery by Anna Koziana, a dense white embroidery featuring openwork patterns. She uses it to decorate tablecloths, table runners, napkins, bed linen and shirts. At the Mieczysław Głuch Author’s Gallery, visitors can attend talks on the sculptural tradition of Podhale and try their hand at sculpting in wood, clay and stone.
The town’s architectural history can also be seen at specific sites. The brick Filas Chapel on ul. 3 Maja was built by J.K. Filas in 1845; its form corresponds to the chancel of the parish church. The parish Church of the Transfiguration, built in the Josephine style, stands behind the small, almost triangular market square. Elements of its former Baroque furnishings have been preserved. Since the early 17th century, the church has been particularly known for the venerated image of the Virgin Mary, believed to work miracles and known as the protector of families and the Madonna of Maków.
Another historical trace is the surviving remains of the stone wall of a 19th-century smelting furnace. It belonged to the “Maurycy” ironworks and is located in the northeastern part of Maków Podhalański, near Moniuszki Street and the yellow hiking trail. Together with the religious buildings, collections and textiles described above, these sites offer several ways to explore the town’s history and culture.
