Two cycling routes in Lgota pass a memorial. The orange route is 12.8 kilometres long and goes past the monument to the victims of the Nazi pacification of the hamlet of Podlas. Local History and Remembrance
The obelisk commemorates eight victims of the Nazi pacification of the hamlet of Podlas on 29 October 1944. The monument was unveiled in 1984 and renovated in 2019. It thus connects remembrance of an event from 1944 with two later dates in its history.
Lgota was first mentioned by its present name in 1380, when Jakób z Lgoty inherited the village. The Lgocki family later owned Lgota continuously for about 300 years, for at least nine generations along the male line. The local school is also part of the village’s development: it was founded in the late 19th century and is now a branch of the primary school in Witanowice.
Events in Earlier Years
The first “Monte Lgota” rally took place in 1979; Lgota was on the route of that inaugural event. The “Krzemionka Cross” trail race was held in Lgota at least three times. At the third event, in June 2022, participants could choose between two courses: 8 kilometres with 300 metres of elevation gain and 15 kilometres with 620 metres of elevation gain. In 2017, Lgota hosted an edition of the Tomice Municipality Harvest Festival. At the time, the Harvest Festival was regarded as a long-standing tradition and formed part of the Carp Valley Festival programme. The village’s historical references thus span its earliest mention, remembrance of the events of 1944, and later sporting and community events.
