Łódź (Lodz) offers several sides to a city break in Poland: architecture and industrial history, film culture, activities for children and adults, and urban green spaces. These themes cater to different interests, without reducing Łódź to a single highlight.

Factory history and film culture

Manufaktura is located on the site of Izrael Poznański’s former factory. Księży Młyn is Łódź’s largest historic factory complex, dating from the second half of the 19th century. The two places offer different historical reference points: Manufaktura occupies the site of a former factory, while Księży Młyn is an entire historic factory complex. The Central Museum of Textiles houses one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary artistic textiles—offering a distinct perspective on the city’s textile history.

The city’s film history can also be explored at several locations. The main exhibition, “Łódź filmowa,” at the Film Museum traces the development of cinematography in Łódź and how the city became the capital of the Polish film industry. The Walk of Fame on Piotrkowska Street also pays tribute to this film heritage. The Łódź power station complex EC1 houses a planetarium, the National Center of Film Culture and the Center of Comics and Interactive Narration. Textiles, cinema and other cultural topics thus stand alongside one another as distinct areas of interest.

Architecture and city life

The buildings on Piotrkowska Street stand out for their eclectic façade details: caryatids, reliefs and bay windows adorn the houses. The tenement buildings and palaces along the street also house shops, restaurants, cafés, pubs and music clubs. Architectural details meet a wide range of places to experience city life.

Łódź Archcathedral offers a different architectural style. Built in the Neo-Gothic style, it also hosts organ concerts. Concert dates vary, so check the schedule in advance if attending a concert is important to your plans.

Places of remembrance and city history

The city’s cemeteries reflect different chapters of its religious and multicultural heritage. The Old Cemetery on Ogrodowa Street was established between 1885 and 1888 as a burial ground for Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox Christians. The Jewish Cemetery of Łódź was founded in 1892 on land donated to the local community by Izrael Poznański. Covering more than 40 hectares, it is the largest Jewish necropolis in Poland and one of the largest in Europe.

The Survivors’ Park commemorates survivors of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto. Its memorials include the Monument of Poles Saving Jews and more than 600 “memory trees” planted by survivors. This site offers a different historical perspective from the city’s architectural and cultural history.

Activities for different interests

If you’re travelling with children, Manufaktura has an entertainment centre and the Experymentarium for children and adults. The Tourist Center of Księży Młyn offers guided tours of workers’ houses and the historic workers’ residential district, as well as city games. Its programme also includes workshops on textile traditions for children and young people, and art workshops for children and adults. Check the current details of the activities before your visit.

The activities vary in focus: the Experymentarium is for children and adults, while the workshops at the Tourist Center cover different subjects and age groups. When planning your visit, you can choose based on whether you’re looking for an interactive venue, city games or an introduction to textile traditions.

Green spaces within the city

Łódź also has a green side: almost a third of the city’s area is covered by green spaces. These include more than 40 city parks and Łagiewnicki Forest within the city limits. This cityscape adds a distinct perspective to the historical and cultural themes when planning your trip.

Whether you’d like to discover Łódź primarily through its factory history, film, architecture, places of remembrance or family activities, these highlights offer different ways to explore the city.
