Plac Kościuszki and the beginnings of the town
When the settlement was founded in 1815, Plac Kościuszki was laid out as the town’s central public square. The Church of St Stanislaus Kostka stands on the west side of the square, at the corner of Łęczycka Street. The town hall was built on the south side of the market square in 1824. Together, these dates provide a timeline for the town’s early development, although the buildings do not necessarily serve the same purpose.
The Church of St Stanislaus Kostka was built in 1827–1828 by the local Protestant congregation. It is a Neoclassical building with a rectangular floor plan. Its construction period, patronage and architecture make it a clearly defined point of interest for travellers interested in the history of the town. The rectangular floor plan adds a specific architectural feature to its stylistic classification.
Neoclassical buildings and historic sites
The town weigh house is also one of Aleksandrów Łódzki’s Neoclassical buildings; it was built in the 1820s. The Jatki Miejskie, the town’s butcher and baker stalls, offer a different historical reference point: the present-day building is a reconstruction from the last decade of the 20th century. Looking at the local buildings, you can therefore compare different periods: the town’s early development and a much later reconstruction.
Another point of interest in the town’s history is the Jewish cemetery. It was established in 1822 on the north-western edge of town, at the junction of today’s Górna and Wąska streets, and is closed. This restriction is important when planning: the cemetery is a historic landmark, but should not be planned as an accessible place to visit. Its location on the north-western edge of town is clearly different from that of the central square and its buildings.
Park, swimming pool and routes
The city park at Plac Tadeusza Kościuszki and the municipal swimming pool “OLIMPIJCZYK” at Bankowa 5 offer a different focus. So, alongside the historic sites, you’ll also find a park and a swimming pool. If you’d like to include the swimming pool in your day’s plans, check the opening hours before your visit.
The routes also offer different ways to get active: the Łódzki Szlak Konny passes through Aleksandrów Łódzki. A combined walking and cycling path starts in the town centre and leads to the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre. One is a horse-riding route through the town; the other is a pedestrian and cycle link from the centre to a named destination. This distinction helps you choose a route based on your planned activity, without treating both as a single route.
