Głowno: Reservoir, Dunes and City History
Accommodation in Głowno
Głowno brings together a waterside landscape, inland dunes and striking reminders of its history. At its heart lies the Zalew Mrożyczka, covering more than 30 hectares and fed by the Mroga River. The Marakan dune complex is also located close to the town centre. If you are planning a stay in Poland, you can choose from a range of interests here: the beach and lake, nature and distinctive plant life, as well as memorial sites and architectural heritage.
The Zalew Mrożyczka: Beach and Nature
The reservoir is in the centre of Głowno and is a prominent destination for anyone who wants to combine time by the water with an interest in the town’s history. There is a sandy beach on its shore. Particularly in summer, residents and tourists visiting Głowno come here to relax. The bathing area is next to the beach.
There is also an educational trail at the Zalew Mrożyczka, with information boards about ecology and environmental protection. It offers a different way to experience the lake than the beach: the boards draw attention to ecological relationships and environmental conservation. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between spending time by the water and taking a themed walk, without having to seek out different destinations around town.
Dune Complex and Forest Nature Reserve
Marakan is the name of the inland dune complex located close to the centre of Głowno. This unusual landform adds a second natural highlight to the impression made by the reservoir fed by the Mroga.
The Zabrzeźnia Forest Nature Reserve lies within the boundaries of Głowno. It protects the silver fir (Abies alba), which reaches the northern limit of its natural range there. Alongside open water and the dune complex, this gives the town a distinct conservation and botanical dimension.
Memorial Sites and Architecture in Głowno
The Dąb Wolności (Oak of Freedom) stands on Plac Wolności. The tree was planted in 1928 in what was then the market square, on the tenth anniversary of Poland regaining its independence. Its location and planting date link a place in today’s townscape to a specific historical occasion.
The Zabrzeźnia manor and park complex includes a manor house built of larch wood in 1840, as well as the remains of a historic park. The Church of St James the Apostle (św. Jakuba Apostoła) is also part of the town’s architectural heritage: it was rebuilt between 1923 and 1930 and designed on the plan of a Greek cross. Together, these examples show different aspects of architectural history, from the wooden manor house to the distinctive church.
The Pałac Jabłońskich is another notable building. The palace was built in 1905–1906 in the eclectic style.
Getting Here and Finding Accommodation
For orientation when arriving by train, Głowno railway station is a useful reference point. It is on railway line No. 15, which connects Bednary with Łódź Kaliska station. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider what matters most for your stay: the central reservoir, nature sites such as Marakan and Zabrzeźnia, or the historic places in the townscape. This makes it easier to match hotels in Głowno to the excursions that interest you as part of your trip to Poland.
