Church Art and Historic Traces

The Church of St John the Baptist is considered one of the oldest churches in Lower Silesia. Its chancel contains Gothic polychrome paintings dating from around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. They depict Christ and animals as symbols of the four Evangelists. Polychromy is multicoloured painted decoration; here, it connects the imagery of the Gospels with a specific historical period. For travellers interested in sacred art, the church offers more than a general indication of its age: the figures depicted and their symbolism also give the building its own art-historical significance.

A Neogothic bridge in Mościsko dates from the 19th century, making it considerably later than the paintings in the church chancel. The 2017 village strategy also lists two penitential crosses among the historic monuments in the village. Other features recorded there include the remains of a gallows on Góra Lelek, as well as stairs and a wall on ul. Polna, considered to be the remains of a castle. These examples encompass different forms of historic traces: from a building and religious art to relics whose interpretation is linked to specific places.

Ponds and Landscape

The 2017 village strategy lists five ponds in Mościsko: four private ponds and a village pond managed by the “Przystań Mościsko” association. For one pond, the strategy mentions European pond turtles, swans and several species of wild ducks as possible sightings. European pond turtles, swans and several species of wild ducks may be present there; sightings are not guaranteed.

A recreation area was created at the pond on ul. Kolejowa; a 2017 village strategy notes that it was maintained by an association. Góra Lelek is among the areas on the outskirts of Mościsko described as viewpoints and walking areas. Alongside the historic attractions, the ponds and landscape areas offer other aspects of the village to explore.

Rural Traditions and Farm Activities

A 2017 village strategy records that rural traditions—including washing clothes, Pierzajki, pickling sauerkraut and the annual threshing at harvest time—were revived and passed on to children. The examples range from household tasks to harvest work, showing the variety of customs that played a part in local tradition.

Ostoja Nad Młynówką is an educational farm in Mościsko, aimed mainly at children and young people. Seasonal hands-on activities include sowing seeds, planting seedlings, washing by the river, making hay and digging in the field. The activities range from sowing and planting to work by the river and in the fields. It is best to check in advance which activities and dates are planned for your visit.

The kitchen is also part of the activities offered to participants: they can knead dough, bake flatbread on a kitchen hotplate and sample bread baked using a traditional method with natural sourdough. Together with the seasonal work, this provides a hands-on introduction to rural activities, while the church, bridge and historic traces appeal to other interests. Mościsko is therefore a particularly tangible choice for trip planning if you are weighing up culture, nature and insights into agricultural traditions.
