Nowa Ruda: Churches, Mining History and Observation Towers
Accommodation in Nowa Ruda
Nowa Ruda combines striking buildings with insights into mining history and viewpoints in the town and on its surrounding heights. If you’re looking for a destination with historic details and views of the Sudetes, you can explore different highlights to shape your plans, from neo-Gothic architecture to a panorama across the eastern and central Sudetes.
Architectural History, Churches and Mining
Nowa Ruda’s town hall is the town’s third town hall building. It was built in 1884 in the Biedermeier style and extended between 1892 and 1894, with a portal, bay windows and window pediments added as decoration. At the building’s northwestern corner stands a fountain with a Baroque statue of Saint Florian dating from 1756. Here, you can explore architectural history and individual decorative features in a specific building.
The Church of St. Nicholas also has historical, scientific and artistic significance. It is one of the largest and most striking neo-Gothic churches in the Kłodzko Region, and was designed by a renowned architect. The weavers’ houses on Nadrzeczna Street offer a different architectural impression: they date from around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, and their vaulted arcades cover today’s pedestrian walkway. Nowa Ruda thus brings together a variety of architectural forms and periods.
The Loreto Chapel and the bronze monument to Saint John the Baptist provide further religious and historical landmarks. The chapel was consecrated in 1768, is one of 20 Polish buildings of this type, and is included and marked on the nationwide route of Loreto chapels. The monument dates from 1909 and depicts the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. Together, these buildings offer different points of interest if you’re interested in religious architecture and imagery.
You can explore the history of mining on the underground “Kopalnia Węgla” tourist route. It was first established in 1996 as a mining museum; the idea was to preserve part of the mine as it existed at the time as a museum. Dawna Kopalnia Nowa Ruda also offers an educational program that includes a visit to the coal mine and a ride on the LECH underground mine railway. Check with the operator for current arrangements when planning your visit.
Viewpoints and Mountains
The “Dwie Wieże” (Two Towers) trail connects two viewpoints in Nowa Ruda. Both feature towers built of red sandstone. The route highlights the viewpoints and their towers; check local conditions before setting out. A 14-metre-high red sandstone observation tower stands on Góra św. Anny. It was built in 1911 and reopened on October 5, 2014, after modernization.
Góra Wszystkich Świętych rises to 648 metres above sea level, making it the highest elevation within Nowa Ruda’s town limits. A stone observation tower with a gallery stands at the summit, offering panoramic views of the eastern and central Sudetes. For planning purposes, there is a clear difference between the trail linking two viewpoints in town and the summit, whose panorama takes in the Sudetes.
The range of attractions extends from the town hall and churches to mining history, observation towers and mountain panoramas. You can choose what to focus on in Nowa Ruda according to whether you’re more interested in historic buildings, the history of coal mining or views of the Sudetes. The town’s varied attractions make it easy to explore through specific points of interest, without limiting yourself to just one way of experiencing it.
