Oława can be explored on two scales: the city’s cultural and green spaces, and the landscapes of Oława County. A specific cultural landmark is the figural astronomical clock in the Town Hall tower; at county level, the Oder Valley and its rivers shape the geographical setting. When planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to distinguish whether you are focusing on the city’s history and a precisely identified place, or on the landscape and activities across the wider county area.

Culture and Green Spaces in Oława

The Town Hall tower in Oława houses a 17th-century figural astronomical clock. It is considered a unique monument in Europe, with moving figures. The clock’s age and moving figures give it two distinct points of interest: a tangible connection to history and a striking design. This makes it a special landmark for travellers interested in the city’s cultural heritage.

The tower is occasionally opened to visitors during city holidays and events such as Dni Koguta or Museum Night. On these occasions, visitors can see the clock mechanism up close and access the viewing gallery, which offers views across the city and its surroundings. Access is limited to such occasions. If you would like to plan a visit, check the event dates in advance.

The city park in Oława offers a different focus. It covers 23.6 hectares and features an educational and ecological trail established in 2013. Its focus on nature and learning complements the city’s history associated with the clock and its mechanism. Oława thus offers two distinct themes side by side: a historic building with moving figures and a spacious city park with an ecological trail.

The Oder Valley, Rivers and Activities in Oława County

Oława County lies in the lowlands of Lower Silesia and in the Oder Valley. The Oława, together with the Oder and the Smortawa, forms the county’s hydrographic axis. Oława is the name of both a town and a river; when finding your way around, pay attention to the context so you do not confuse the place with the waterway.

The Oder and its tributaries provide good conditions for water sports and organised kayaking trips in Oława County. This offers a different focus from visiting the Town Hall clock: here, the emphasis is on water-based activities across the county, while the clock is a single piece of the city’s cultural heritage. This distinction can help you decide what to focus on when planning your trip.

There are also specific reference points for exploring on foot and by bike. Route No. 1, “In the Footsteps of Nature Reserves,” starts at Oława railway station. As a link to the wider region, Railway Main Line No. 132 runs through the centre of the county and forms part of the Trans-European Railway Corridor E 30, Berlin–Wrocław–Katowice–Lviv–Kyiv. There are 44.28 km of cycle paths in the area of Oława Gmina and the town of Oława. Oława Gmina also lists hiking and horse riding as tourist activities in its area.

Historic Places and Local Events

The area of Oława Gmina is home to a range of historic sites. The former fortified settlement of Ryczyn is preserved in well-maintained ramparts several metres high. The castle in Oleśnica Mała is one of the largest castles in Lower Silesia. A 19-hectare English-style park adjoins the castle in Jakubowice. The ramparts, castle and park each offer a different perspective on the history and character of the gmina.

Another cultural highlight is the traditional Easter market, organised by Oława Gmina and the town of Oława. If the market influences your decision to travel, check the event dates before planning your stay around it.
