Goldberg in Silesia (Złotoryja) combines a town surrounded by the Kaczawskie Foothills with a history visible in its defensive walls, old houses and gold mining. Złotoryja’s Old Town has a preserved medieval street layout and restored historic townhouses. You can walk along the defensive walls and through the green spaces laid out where the former moat once stood. More than 100-year-old trees are often found there. The Muzeum Złota is also closely connected with the fortifications: it is housed in a listed building from the second half of the 17th century, incorporated into the walls. The “Górnictwo złota” exhibition explores the history of gold mining and gold extraction in Złotoryja and the surrounding area. On display are mining tools and gold pans, as well as various forms of gold and gold-like minerals, including “fool’s gold.” A visit thus takes you from the town’s architectural history to the objects and materials of gold mining.
Church, Science and Discovery
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural elements. Inside is a mysterious well. During the 2026 tourist season, the tower was open Thursday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The architecture and well offer their own historical and spatial points of interest during a church visit; the seasonal tower hours should be treated as separate visitor information.
SOWA, a local science centre, offers a different theme, with a concept based on independent searching, discovering and experimenting. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for an individual visit. SOWA is open to visitors Tuesday through Saturday, except on public holidays. This means that, alongside its gold and town history, Złotoryja also offers time for discovery and hands-on exploration as part of your itinerary.
If you would like to explore the town in a playful way, you can solve puzzles on themed quests, learn about Złotoryja’s history and visit interesting places. Recurring events include Święto Złota, which brings the local community together and promotes its cultural heritage. Quests and festivals therefore offer a different focus from visiting historic buildings or the science centre.
