Łagów combines a unique location between two lakes with historic buildings and trails through nature and the surrounding countryside. At its heart is Zamek Joannitów, the Knights Hospitaller Castle, situated on the strip of land between the lakes. In Łagów, lakeside scenery and local history come together in a compact area—an ideal starting point if you want to plan your stay around different interests.
Lakes and Viewpoints
Lake Ciecz, also known as Lake Trześniowskie, and Lake Łagowskie are connected in the centre by a shallow canal. You can enjoy views of Lake Łagowskie from a boat, kayak or pedal boat. The two lakes are not just the setting for the Knights Hospitaller Castle; they also offer a perspective from the water.
The 35-metre-high tower of the Knights Hospitaller Castle offers panoramic views of Łagów. Another viewpoint is the railway viaduct on Mostowa Street. Built in 1906, it is 40 metres long and about 25 metres high. Stairs lead to the top, where panoramic views stretch across Łagów. The castle and viaduct offer different vantage points: one from the tower overlooking the town, the other from a historic structure.
Architectural History in the Townscape
Brama Marchijska is also part of the history of the town’s fortifications. This valuable medieval feature was built in the 16th century on the site of a presumed wooden predecessor dating from the 14th century.
Kościół św. Jana Chrzciciela offers a different perspective. This stone and brick building was constructed in 1725 in the neoclassical style and remodelled in 1877. Together with the fortifications and the Knights Hospitaller Castle, it lets you discover more than one period of the town’s history. If you choose Łagów for its architecture, these different dates and styles offer concrete points of interest for a culturally focused stay.
Compare Trails by Length and Duration
When planning, it is worth comparing the details given for the different routes. The easy Jezioro Łagowskie landscape trail is about 9 kilometres long and takes around two and a half hours. The Jezioro Czarne nature and cultural history trail is longer, at about 12 kilometres, and takes around three hours. For these two trails, you can compare both the approximate distance and the stated duration.
A shorter route is the Sokola Góra trail: it is about 1.5 kilometres long, takes around 40 minutes and is located right next to the Lower Castle area of Łagów. By contrast, the Pawski Ług nature trail runs 12 kilometres from the Lower Castle area to a peat bog reserve, then back along the western shore of Lake Łagowskie.
Other routes extend beyond Łagów. The Skansen Jemiołów nature and cultural history trail runs 13 kilometres from the Lower Castle area to the open-air agricultural museum in Jemiołów. The 18-kilometre Bracikowo nature and landscape route starts in Łagów and loops back via Jemiołów and Bracikowo. The Buczyna route also returns to Łagów; it is 22 kilometres long and runs via Sieniawa, Buczyna, Bucze and Żelechów. The place names and distances help you distinguish these routes by their course and length.
In the wider region, the Łagowskie Stowarzyszenie Turystyki Rowerowej i Pieszej has marked out four cycling routes and six hiking trails through the landscape of Łagowsko-Sulęciński Park. Lubuskie Lato Filmowe has been held in Łagów every year since 1969. Jarmark Smakosza is another regular event.
