Schwiebus (Świebodzin): City history at the market square

Market Square, Town Hall, and City Fortifications

The town hall was probably built in the second half of the 14th century. Stone barrel vaults from that period have been preserved in its cellars. The church pw. św. Michała Archanioła stands at the northeastern corner of the market square. It was built largely in the second half of the 15th century as a three-aisled hall church with a pentagonal presbytery. The two buildings show how different medieval architectural forms came together around the central square.

The city fortifications can also be dated: they were built from the 14th century onward. In the 16th century, Schwiebus was surrounded by a defensive wall with twelve towers and three city gates, as well as a wide moat. The municipal route “Szlakiem murów miejskich” leads along Plac Jana Pawła II, ul. Wałowa, ul. Okrężna, ul. Bramkowa, ul. Szpitalna, Park Chopina, and ul. Kilińskiego. It helps visitors locate the traces of the city fortifications.

The castle was built in the 16th century as part of the city fortifications and was later altered by numerous renovations. Two ruined wings of the building remain. Together with information about the former wall, towers, and moat, they give an impression of how closely the castle's architectural history was tied to the city's defense.

Churches and Different Layers of History

Another landmark in the city's history is the church NMP Królowej Polski. Built between 1698 and 1900 in the Neo-Gothic style, it stands on the site of two earlier Protestant churches. Its construction history is therefore quite different from that of the church at the market square: its long construction period, Neo-Gothic style, and the older churches that once stood on the same site all shape how it is understood.

The figure of Christ the King is also part of Schwiebus's history. Construction work lasted from 2005 to 2010; the figure was blessed on November 21, 2010. It welcomes pilgrims arriving individually or in organized groups from Poland and various parts of the world. In addition to its older buildings, the city therefore offers a religious destination and a continuing pilgrimage tradition.

City History and Landscapes at the Regional Museum

Two permanent exhibitions at the Regional Museum offer different perspectives on the region. “Historia miasta i regionu” explores the multicultural traditions of the Świebodzin area and the city's connections to the history of the Silesian–Greater Poland borderland. For visitors interested in cultural history, the exhibition looks beyond individual buildings to the area's history and diverse traditions.

The permanent exhibition “Przyroda Ziemi Lubuskiej” focuses on the landscape of the Lubusz region. It covers forests, lakes, meadows, and peat bogs, as well as numerous representatives of the region's flora and fauna and designated protected species and areas. The exhibition's subject therefore extends beyond the urban fabric to the region's natural history. The two exhibitions have different focuses: city and cultural history on the one hand, and landscape and nature on the other.
